Article Synopsis
  • Pregnant women are at higher risk for serious complications from seasonal influenza and Covid-19, making vaccination critical during pregnancy for both the mother and her newborn.
  • A survey of 310 pregnant women showed varying levels of intention to get vaccinated against influenza (43.9%), Covid-19 (36.8%), pertussis (36.1%), and RSV (39.4%).
  • Factors boosting vaccine acceptance included trust in vaccines, recommendations from healthcare providers, knowledge about diseases, and past flu vaccinations.

Objective: Glutamine synthetase (GS), a key enzyme in the production of glutamine, is preserved in skeletal muscle during early aging (<24 mo). Because the effects of advanced age on GS are unknown, we investigated the effect of advanced age (>24 mo) on GS activity in skeletal muscle. We hypothesized that advanced age would enhance muscle GS activity.

Hypertriglyceridemia observed in magnesium (Mg)-deficient rats was associated with a significant increase in the very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) plus low-density lipoprotein (LDL) fractions. The results from in vitro copper-induced lipid peroxidation, expressed in terms of conjugated dienes and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances content, showed that VLDL + LDL particles from Mg-deficient rats were more susceptible to oxidative damage than lipoproteins from control rats. These results suggest that the mechanism responsible for the atherogenicity and tissue damage characteristic of Mg deficiency may be mediated by an increased susceptibility of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins to peroxidation in hypertriglyceridemic animals.
