Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates vanishing gastroschisis, a serious condition where a periumbilical defect closes in utero, often resulting in intestinal issues and high mortality rates, to explore its pathology, ultrasound traits, and post-birth outcomes.
  • - Over a year, six infants with vanishing gastroschisis were identified, showing more severe intestinal dilation in ultrasounds compared to normal cases, with a notable mortality rate of 50%, primarily due to complete midgut atresia.
  • - Researchers stress the need for better monitoring of fetuses with significant bowel dilation to consider earlier delivery as a way to potentially reduce complications and improve survival rates in affected infants.

We present a severe case of vanishing gastroschisis resulting in intrauterine death with post mortem examination findings. Gastroschisis is defined as a full thickness paraumbilical abdominal wall defect associated with evisceration of fetal intestine. It is almost always right-sided.

Aim: The aim of the study was to analyse our experience of managing complete abdominal wound dehiscence in preterm neonates non operatively, when primary closure was not possible. We used intrasite gel (a carboxymethyl cellulose polymer which helps in wound debridement and healing) and occlusive duoderme dressings.

Materials And Methods: There were seven neonates who developed abdominal dehiscence following laparotomy between January 2000 and December 2006.
