The membrane attack complex drives thrombotic microangiopathy in complement mediated atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Introduction of complement (C) inhibition into clinical practice has revolutionized the treatment of patients with complement-mediated atypical hemolytic syndrome (aHUS). Our C3 mouse model, engineered around a gain of function point mutation in C3, is associated with complement mediated aHUS in man, allowing us to study the clinical disease in a preclinical model. Backcrossing our model onto C7 deficient and C5aR1 deficient mice enabled further determination of the roles of the C5a-C5aR1 axis and C5b-9 (the membrane attack complex) on kidney disease.

A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial Involving Financial Incentives to Facilitate Hepatitis C Treatment Uptake Among People Who Inject Drugs: ETHOS Engage Study.

The primary aim of this study was to establish the feasibility of implementing a larger RCT designed to evaluate the effect of financial incentives on HCV treatment initiation among persons receiving opioid agonist therapy and/or who have injected drugs in the prior six months. ETHOS Engage is an observational cohort of participants recruited from drug treatment and needle and syringe programs in Australia. Among 11 drug and alcohol clinics, participants who were HCV RNA-positive were randomized (1:1) to receive standard of care or a AUD $60 gift card at treatment initiation.

A scoping review to determine if adverse human health effects are associated with use of organophosphates for mosquito control.

Organophosphate insecticides are widely used for adult mosquito control. Although proven effective in reducing mosquito populations and limiting arbovirus transmission, public concern exists regarding potential human health effects associated with organophosphate exposure. The aim of this scoping review was to describe any reported human health conditions associated with organophosphates during their use for adult mosquito control in the United States and Canada.

Calcium phosphate deposition, tertiary hyperparathyroidism, and the long-term effect on kidney allografts.

Background: Tertiary hyperparathyroidism adversely affects kidney allografts, with calcium phosphate deposition hypothesized to be an underlying cause. We analyzed allograft biopsies to investigate risk factors for calcium phosphate deposition and understand its impact on allograft function.
