Despite numerous studies on fetal therapy for myelomeningoceles (MMC), the pathophysiology of this malformation remains poorly understood. This study aimed to analyze the biochemical profile and proteome of amniotic fluid (AF) supernatants from MMC fetuses to explore the prenatal pathophysiology. Biochemical analysis of 61 AF samples from MMC fetuses was compared with 45 healthy fetuses' samples.

Article Synopsis
  • Retinal degenerative diseases are a major cause of blindness with no current treatments, but retinal prostheses aim to restore vision by activating remaining retinal cells.
  • A new photoacoustic retinal stimulation technology was developed using a flexible film that converts near-infrared laser pulses into localized acoustic waves, effectively targeting retinal cells with high precision.
  • Testing showed that this method can activate retinal ganglion cells in both normal and degenerated retinae, and the film was safe for use in living rats, suggesting its potential for restoring vision in blind patients with high spatial accuracy.

Virulence of apicomplexan parasites is based on their ability to divide rapidly to produce significant biomass. The regulation of their cell cycle is therefore key to their pathogenesis. Phosphorylation is a crucial posttranslational modification that regulates many aspects of the eukaryotic cell cycle.

Focal Cortical Dysplasia, Hemimegalencephaly and Cortical Tuber are pediatric epileptogenic malformations of cortical development (MCDs) frequently pharmaco-resistant and mostly surgically treated by the resection of epileptic cortex. Availability of cortical resection samples allowed significant mechanistic discoveries directly from human material. Causal brain somatic or germline mutations in the AKT/PI3K/DEPDC5/MTOR genes were identified.

In resource-scarce settings, melioidosis is associated with up to 80% mortality. Studies of melioidosis in Cambodia report primarily on pediatric populations with localized infection; however, literature describing Cambodian adults with severe melioidosis is lacking. We present a case series of 35 adults with sequence-confirmed Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteremia presenting to a provincial referral hospital in rural Cambodia.
