Article Synopsis
  • Ankle fusion is a common treatment for severe ankle arthritis when total replacement isn't suitable, but there's concern about arthritis in nearby joints post-fusion.
  • This study analyzed 41 patients who underwent tibiotalar (TT) or tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) fusion using an Ilizarov external fixator, looking at adjacent joint outcomes over time.
  • Results showed that 88.3% of TT fusion patients experienced spontaneous fusion in adjacent joints, indicating potential benefits in joint preservation, although the findings may not apply to all patients needing similar interventions.

We present the results of 15 patients who sustained total or subtotal traumatic amputation of the lower limbs who were treated by acute limb shortening and stabilisation with external fixator, revascularization and early lengthening with Ilizarov ring fixator. The mean age of the patients was 28 years [5-38]. There were three females and 12 males.

To truly understand the mechanisms through which resveratrol exerts its biological effects, the key direct interactions between resveratrol and its target biomolecules must be identified. With an increasing number of biochemical tools to measure and quantify direct physical interactions between biomolecules, there have been around 20 proteins identified as having a specific affinity to resveratrol to date. Resveratrol has been described as a promiscuous molecule, and one would expect it to bind with numerous proteins, which would help explain why resveratrol appears to have so many health benefits and has been shown to act upon various different pathways related to a diverse range of conditions.

Background: The treatment options of bone loss with infections include bone transport with external fixators, vascularized bone grafts, non-vascularized autogenous grafts and vascularized allografts. The research hypothesis was that the graft length and intact ipsilateral fibula influenced hypertrophy and stress fracture. We retrospectively studied the graft hypertrophy in 15 patients, in whom vascularized fibular graft was done for post-traumatic tibial defects with infection.
