[Prosthetic hip joint infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes].

The authors report an unusual case of prosthetic hip joint infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes. The patient, an 87-year-old lady who had undergone a right total hip replacement 10 years previously, presented with pain and restriction of hip motion three weeks after an episode of abdominal pain. Aspiration of the joint yielded a dark fluid, from which Listeria Monocytogenes type 4-b was isolated.

Inhibition effect of dietary inulin and oligofructose on the growth of transplantable mouse tumor.

Background: The influence of 15% inulin or oligofructose incorporated in to the basal diet on the growth of transplantable mouse tumor (TLT) was investigated.

Material And Methods: This dietary treatment was performed starting at day 7 before tumor transplantation and continued until the end of observation. The results were evaluated by the mortality rates in the ascitic form of tumor, or by twice weekly solid tumor measurements, with vernier caliper.

Clonal and temporal patterns of nasopharyngeal penicillin-susceptible and penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae stains in children attending a day care center.

The nasopharyngeal carriage of penicillin-susceptible and penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PSSp and PRSp, respectively) was analyzed in 116 children attending a day care center in Rouen, France, by three observation periods in November, January, and March of the winter of 1993 to 1994. The carriage rate of S. pneumoniae was found to be 47.
