Anesthesia Management for Palliative Surgery of Massive Hepatic Metastatic Melanoma.

We report the perioperative management of a patient with melanoma. Surgical intervention was withheld at multiple institutions because of the presence of metastases; the patient was undergoing experimental immunotherapy and had responded everywhere except in the liver. She underwent hepatic right trisegmentectomy to improve her quality of life and to allow resumption of immunotherapy.

Acute kidney injury following orthotopic liver transplantation: incidence, risk factors, and effects on patient and graft outcomes.

Background: Liver transplant recipients frequently develop acute kidney injury (AKI), but the predisposing factors and long-term consequences of AKI are not well understood. The aims of this study were to identify predisposing factors for early post-transplant AKI and the impact of AKI on patient and graft survival and to construct a model to predict AKI using clinical variables.

Methods: In this 5-year retrospective study, we analysed clinical and laboratory data from 424 liver transplant recipients from our centre.

Wearing ambidextrous vinyl gloves does not impair manual dexterity.

Universal precautions mandate that health care workers wear gloves to prevent the unintended spread of bloodborne pathogens. Gloves may affect manual dexterity, generally delaying task completion. Our previous study showed that wearing the wrong size latex surgical glove degraded manual dexterity.

Central venous thrombosis and perioperative vascular access in adult intestinal transplantation.

Background: Venous access is crucial in intestinal transplantation, but a thrombosed venous system may prevent the use of central veins of the upper body. The incidence of venous thrombosis and the necessity to perform alternative vascular access (AVA) in intestinal transplant recipients have not been fully investigated.

Methods: Records of adult patients who underwent intestinal transplantation between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2009, were reviewed.
