Adapting and applying student-centered learning in a perfusion clinical rotation.

While the process of teaching student perfusionists has been in development since the 1950s, the publication of the processes to improve perfusion clinical education has been largely lacking. Publications regarding education from other allied health and medical fields have shown the value of student-centered learning. The use of reflective practice to move perfusion students from thinking about actions after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) to reflecting and reacting on actions during CPB is better encouraged by moving from a teacher-centered to a student-centered clinical model.

Gentle and fast all-atom model refinement to cryo-EM densities via a maximum likelihood approach.

Better detectors and automated data collection have generated a flood of high-resolution cryo-EM maps, which in turn has renewed interest in improving methods for determining structure models corresponding to these maps. However, automatically fitting atoms to densities becomes difficult as their resolution increases and the refinement potential has a vast number of local minima. In practice, the problem becomes even more complex when one also wants to achieve a balance between a good fit of atom positions to the map, while also establishing good stereochemistry or allowing protein secondary structure to change during fitting.

Automated simulation-based membrane protein refinement into cryo-EM data.

The resolution revolution has increasingly enabled single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) reconstructions of previously inaccessible systems, including membrane proteins-a category that constitutes a disproportionate share of drug targets. We present a protocol for using density-guided molecular dynamics simulations to automatically refine atomistic models into membrane protein cryo-EM maps. Using adaptive force density-guided simulations as implemented in the GROMACS molecular dynamics package, we show how automated model refinement of a membrane protein is achieved without the need to manually tune the fitting force ad hoc.

Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training and impact on mental illness and substance use-related stigma among law enforcement.

Limited empirical data and research exists about stigmatizing attitudes and perceptions held by law enforcement officers towards persons with mental illness and substance use issues. Pre- and post-training survey data from 92 law enforcement personnel who attended a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training was used to investigate training-related changes in mental illness stigma and substance use stigma. Training participant's mean age was 38.

Cardiac Surgery During Pregnancy.

The need for cardiovascular surgery during pregnancy is infrequent but is expected to increase as more patients with congenital heart disease live into childbearing years. Care for women considering pregnancy with residual, recurrent, or newly identified lesions related to congenital heart disease disease must address therapeutic options that maximize the mother's health while acknowledging concerns for procedural effects on fetal development and risks associated with preterm delivery. This report summarizes the current knowledge regarding optimal intraoperative techniques for the pregnant patient and provides recommendations to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes.
