Short-branch Microsporidia were previously shown to form a basal grade within the expanded Microsporidia clade and to branch near the classical, long-branch Microsporidia. Although they share simpler versions of some morphological characteristics, they do not show accelerated evolutionary rates, making them ideal candidates to study the evolutionary trajectories that have led to long-branch microsporidian unique characteristics. However, most sequences assigned to the short-branch Microsporidia are undescribed, novel environmental lineages for which the identification requires knowledge of where they can be found.

Cognitive impairment and older age are major risk factors for postoperative delirium. Professional societies have advocated preoperative screening to identify at-risk individuals for implementation of interventions, which have moderate effectiveness in preventing delirium. However, it remains unclear from the guidelines whether screening should be completed routinely for all older individuals or targeted, and also which specific screening tool is preferred.

Two common approaches to study the composition of environmental protist communities are metabarcoding and metagenomics. Raw metabarcoding data are usually processed into Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) or amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) through clustering or denoising approaches, respectively. Analogous approaches are used to assemble metagenomic reads into metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs).

Introduction/importance: Peritoneal encapsulation (PE) is a rare congenital anomaly characterised by the presence of an accessory peritoneal membrane which encases part of the small bowel. Typically, this remains asymptomatic, however; in rare cases, a person may present with symptoms suggestive of a small bowel obstruction.

Case Presentation: Here we present a case of a 58 year old gentleman with congenital PE causing a bowel obstruction which was revealed on commuted tomography scan.
