Background: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) accumulation has been associated with inflammation, atherosclerosis and microvascular dysfunction. Whether increased EAT volume is associated with coronary plaque vulnerability and demand myocardial ischemia in patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) is less explored.
Methods: In 125 patients (median age 63[58, 69] years and 58% women) with chest pain and non-obstructive CAD, EAT volume was quantified on non-contrast cardiac CT images.
Importance: Postpartum transfusion is the most common indicator of severe maternal morbidity in the US. Higher rates of anemia are associated with a higher blood transfusion rate.
Objective: To determine if providing, rather than recommending, supplements with iron at prenatal visits in a medically underserved community is associated with improved hematologic indices and reduced blood transfusion.

The bacterial human pathogen Helicobacter pylori produces a type IV secretion system (cagT4SS) to inject the oncoprotein CagA into gastric cells. The cagT4SS external pilus mediates attachment of the apparatus to the target cell and the delivery of CagA. While the composition of the pilus is unclear, CagI is present at the surface of the bacterium and required for pilus formation.

Here we identify two Brucella abortus effectors, NyxA and NyxB, that interfere with host protease SENP3, and this facilitates intracellular replication of the pathogen. The translocated Nyx effectors directly interact with SENP3 via a defined acidic patch (identified from the crystal structure of NyxB), preventing nucleolar localisation of SENP3 at late stages of infection.
