Biochemical approaches were used in freely moving rats to determine, under steady-state conditions, the brain/arterial plasma partition coefficients of L-tryptophan and alpha-[3H]methyl-L-tryptophan, from which the lumped constant for the alpha-methyl-L-tryptophan method of estimating the rate of brain serotonin synthesis is calculated. Influence of the thyroid hormone status on tyrosine hydroxylase in central and peripheral catecholaminergic structures.

We investigated the effect of hyper- and hypothyroidism on tyrosine hydroxylase protein concentration in the locus coeruleus (divided into anterior and posterior parts), the substantia nigra and the adrenals of adult rats. Rats were made hypothyroid with propylthiouracile (PTU, 0.02% in drinking water for 21 days) or hyperthyroid by thyroxine injection (100 or 250 micrograms/kg/day), for 3 or 17 days.
