There are many etiologies for respiratory distress in newborns, one of the rare causes being nasopharyngeal tumors. Of that category, salivary gland anlage tumor (SGAT) is exceedingly rare. Symptoms of SGAT vary by patient, but the most common presenting symptom is respiratory distress.

Article Synopsis
  • Malakoplakia is a rare inflammatory disorder mainly seen in immunocompromised patients, characterized by an inability of macrophages to effectively kill bacteria.
  • Although it usually occurs in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal regions, this report highlights a rare case where malakoplakia affected the maxilla and maxillary alveolar ridge mucosa, marking a unique instance of oral cavity involvement.
  • Diagnostic stains revealed specific patterns indicating malakoplakia without evidence of microbial infection, emphasizing the need for clinicians and pathologists to consider this condition when evaluating lesions in immunosuppressed patients.

Dysgenetic polycystic disease, also known just as polycystic disease, is a very rare developmental abnormality affecting the salivary gland duct system. This entity has been reported in only 21 patients previously, although a careful review suggests only 16 patients have histological evidence of the disease. In previously reported cases, this lesion most commonly presents as either an incidental finding or as a swelling affecting the parotid glands bilaterally, or rarely the submandibular glands bilaterally.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the challenge of differentiating between two dental tumors: non-calcifying variant of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (NCLC-CEOT) and amyloid-rich central odontogenic fibroma (AR-COdF), focusing on the role of CD1a positivity in their diagnosis.
  • Researchers analyzed a series of cases with distinct histopathological features and stained them for CD1a and amyloid to determine their relationships and diagnostic criteria.
  • Results indicated that while CD1a positivity appears in both CEOTs and NCLC-CEOTs, it does not reliably distinguish them from AR-COdFs, suggesting that histopathologic criteria should take precedence over staining results.

Approximately 1 in 3 American adults has prediabetes, a condition characterized by blood glucose levels that are above normal, not in the type 2 diabetes ranges, and that increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Evidence-based treatments can be used to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in adults with prediabetes. The American Medical Association (AMA) has collaborated with health care organizations across the country to build sustainable diabetes prevention strategies.
