Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how often to screen critically ill adults on ventilators and the best method for conducting spontaneous breathing trials (SBT) to successfully extubate them.
  • It involves a randomized clinical trial with 797 participants who required mechanical ventilation, comparing once-daily and more frequent screenings alongside two SBT techniques: pressure-supported and T-piece.
  • Results show no significant differences in the time to successful extubation based on screening frequency or SBT technique, indicating that both methods may be similarly effective.

Importance: One primary function of occupational therapy state licensure boards (SLBs) is the discipline of ethical misconduct by licensed occupational therapy practitioners. However, SLB sanctioning is poorly understood by practitioners, regulators, and the public.

Objective: To identify predictors of occupational therapy practitioner sanctioning outcomes in the United States.

Research suggests that 60-70% of adolescents detained in the juvenile justice system meet criteria for a mental health disorder compared to 20% of the general adolescent population; however, the vast majority do not receive services. Unfortunately, mental health symptoms often worsen during detainment, and detainment is linked to lower levels of educational attainment and increased risk of adult recidivism. Thus, not only are these adolescents unlikely to receive needed mental health care, but also the lack of interventions in detention may exacerbate inequities of contact with the criminal justice system in adulthood.

Background: Sepsis and associated organ failures confer substantial morbidity and mortality. Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) is implicated in the development of tissue oxidative damage in a wide variety of respiratory and cardiovascular disorders including sepsis and sepsis-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We examined whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the XDH gene (encoding XOR) might influence susceptibility to and outcome in patients with sepsis.

Background: Few studies have examined mental health symptom trajectories and engagement in mental health follow-up in relation to mechanism of injury. This study examined differences in engagement between survivors of nonviolent and violent injury in the Trauma Resilience and Recovery Program (TRRP), a stepped-care, technology-enhanced model that provides evidence-based mental health screening and treatment to patients admitted to our Level I trauma service.

Methods: This study analyzed data from 2,527 adults enrolled in TRRP at hospital bedside between 2018 and 2022, including 398 patients (16%) with a violent injury and 2,129 patients (84%) with a nonviolent injury.
