The impact of mild COVID-19 on medium-term respiratory function.

Background: There is a paucity of evidence on the impact of mild COVID-19 on the respiratory system, particularly in non-healthcare seeking individuals.

Objectives: To investigate the effects of mild COVID-19 on respiratory function and to identify indicators of decreased lung function.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 175 non-healthcare-seeking individuals with confirmed acute SARS-CoV-2 infection who did not require hospitalisation.

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine Prophylaxis Has No Effect on Bone Mineral Density and Bone Mineral Content in African Breastfeeding Women Receiving Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV.

Background: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) when used as preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in pregnancy is considered safe overall however there is insufficient evidence of its effect on maternal bone. We compared bone mineral density (BMD) and content (BMC) at the lumbar spine (LS) and hip of African breastfeeding women exposed and not exposed to TDF-containing PrEP in a randomized control trial (RCT).

Methods: This is a secondary data analysis of an RCT where pregnant women were randomized to initiating PrEP in pregnancy or delayed initiation of PrEP until breastfeeding cessation.

Course of measured energy expenditure over the first 10 days of critical illness: A nested prospective study in an adult surgical ICU.

Background & Aims: Various factors may cause significant daily variations in energy expenditure in and between critically patients. This nested, prospective study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04099108) in a predominantly trauma surgical ICU, aimed to determine the course of measured energy expenditure over the first 10 days of critical illness, and to identify factors contributing to energy expenditure.

Rare triad of anomalous biliary anatomy (pancreaticobiliary maljunction), choledochal cyst and cholangiocarcinoma in a 45-year-old white male: A case report.

Pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBM) is a congenital anomaly where the pancreatic and bile ducts join outside the duodenal wall, resulting in formation of an elongated common channel. In normal physiology, the sphincter of Oddi regulates the junction between the pancreatic and bile ducts. Individuals with PBM lack this regulatory mechanism resulting in reflux of pancreatic juices into the biliary tract.

In-utero exposure to tenofovir-containing pre-exposure prophylaxis and bone mineral content in HIV-unexposed infants in South Africa.

Introduction: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is a common drug of choice for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or as a combination HIV treatment for pregnant women. In-utero exposure to TDF was found to be associated with lower bone mineral content (BMC) in HIV-exposed uninfected neonates. Data for infants born to women taking TDF-PrEP are lacking.
