Organic matter is actively searched on Mars with current and future space missions as it is a key to detecting potential biosignatures. Given the current harsh environmental conditions at the surface of Mars, many organic compounds might not be preserved over a long period as they are exposed to energetic radiation such as ultraviolet light, which is not filtered above 190 nm by the martian atmosphere. Moreover, the presence of strong oxidizing species in the regolith, such as perchlorate salts, might enhance the photodegradation of organic compounds of astrobiological interest.

The behavior of Langmuir monolayers of saturated and unsaturated C18 triglycerides (TAGs) was studied as two-dimensional (2D) models for paint systems at the air-water interface or transferred onto solid films. The organization of saturated tristearin (C18:0) monolayer was probed thanks to grazing incidence X-ray diffraction: one observes a hexagonal packing of the chains perpendicular to the air-water interface, in contrast to what is described in the literature. Conversely, the mono- and polyunsaturated TAGs (triolein C18:1, trilinolein C18:2, and trilinolenin C18:3) monolayers do not present any organization at the air-water interface but do exhibit peculiar reactivity regarding the air atmosphere.

The proteomic analysis of hairs, yarns or textiles has emerged as a powerful method to determine species of origin, mainly used in archaeozoological research and fraud control. Differentiation between the South American camelid (SAC) species (the wild guanaco and vicuña and their respective domesticates the llama and alpaca) is particularly challenging due to poor database information and significant hybridization between species. In this study, we analysed 41 modern and 4 archaeological samples from the four SACs species.

The sandarac resin (Tetraclinis articulata) has been long used for its properties, mostly as a varnish component. Called juniper resin until the nineteenth century, the real botanical origin of sandarac is still unclear. The first approach to this issue is the review of the evolution of the etymology, terminology, and botanical description of sandarac through time.

The three principal types of molecules composing diterpenic resins are the abietanes, pimaranes and labdanes. The study of their fragmentation was performed by gas chromatography coupled to an ion trap mass spectrometer, on standards and resins used in paint varnishes: colophony and sandarac. We found that the general fragmentation pattern was mostly governed by the location of the double bonds on the different cycles and the presence of functional groups, and not by the nature of the C13 group in the case of abietanes and pimaranes.
