A 2 × 2 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of a high level of sorghum distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS; 20%), with or without a combination of protease and xylanase in broiler chickens, under a necrotic enteritis disease challenge. To characterise the effects of dietary protein content on threonine metabolism during pregnancy, rats were fed diets containing 18% or 9% protein and then killed at different stages of gestation. Serum threonine concentrations fell significantly faster in the animals fed the diet containing 9% protein when compared to those fed the diet containing 18% protein. On day 4 of gestation the rate of threonine oxidation was higher in maternal liver homogenates prepared from the animals fed the diet containing 18% protein.

Evidence to support an association between early nutrition and the development of obesity in the rat is equivocal. In this study we have investigated the postnatal growth, glucose tolerance, and adipocyte function of the offspring from pregnant rats fed with diets containing either 20% or 8% protein during gestation. By 25 weeks of age, the female offspring of dams fed with the diet containing 8% protein had a significantly lower adult body weight due in part to a decrease in body fat.

Vitamin A deficiency is one of the most common dietary deficiencies in the developing world and is a major health concern where it is associated with increased risk of fetal and infant mortality and morbidity. Early studies in the rat demonstrated that, in addition to respiratory problems, neonates showed evidence of mobility problems in response to moderate vitamin A deficiency. This study investigated whether moderate deficiency of this vitamin plays a role in regulating key skeletal muscle regulatory pathways during development.

Low birthweight piglets have an increased incidence of mortality and morbidity. As there are few opportunities to remedy the detrimental consequences of low birthweight after birth, it is important to understand the nature of fetal growth retardation and to identify when low birthweight fetuses deviate from the growth trajectory of their normally grown siblings. The aims of this study were to identify the nature, timing and possible causal factors influencing inadequate fetal growth in Large White x Landrace (LW) and Chinese Meishan (MS) gilts at three stages of pregnancy.
