The last resort requirement under REACH: From principle to practice.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European Union regulation that aims to protect human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals. Article 25 clearly states that: "[i]n order to avoid animal testing, testing on vertebrate animals for the purposes of this Regulation shall be undertaken only as a last resort." In practice, however, the standard information requirements under REACH are still primarily filled using animal studies.

Carbon dioxide tolerability and toxicity in rat and man: A translational study.

Due the increasing need for storage of carbon dioxide (CO) more individuals are prone to be exposed to high concentrations of CO accidentally released into atmosphere, with deleterious consequences. We tested the effect of increasing CO concentrations in humans (6-12%) and rats (10-50%) at varying inhalation times (10-60 min). In humans, a continuous positive airway pressure helmet was used to deliver the gas mixture to the participants.

Acute facial nerve palsy in children in a Lyme disease-endemic area in the Netherlands.

We assessed the prevalence of Lyme neuroborreliosis in children with acute facial nerve palsy in a Lyme-endemic region and patient characteristics associated with this. All children visiting one of three participating hospitals between January 2010 and December 2016 were included in the study. Of 104 children referred to the hospital with facial nerve palsy, 43% had Lyme neuroborreliosis and 57% idiopathic facial palsy.

Stüve-Wiedemann syndrome: recurrent neonatal infections caused by impairment of JAK/STAT 3 pathway.

Stüve-Wiedemann syndrome (OMIM #601559) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by skeletal dysplasia, consecutive infections, feeding difficulties and autonomic dysregulation. We present an Afro-Caribbean family with two siblings diagnosed with Stüve-Wiedemann syndrome. The underlying loss-of-function mutation in the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor gene is thought to impair proper functioning of the JAK/STAT 3 pathway.
