Prevalence and Distribution of Postvoid Residual Urine Volume in a Hospital-Based Sample of Men with Symptomatic Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a known cause of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) in aging men. Patients present with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), elevated postvoid residual urine (PVR), and reduced peak flow rate of urine. Although urodynamic study is the gold standard for diagnosing and quantifying BOO, it is invasive and as such urologists in their routine practice frequently rely on less invasive methods like PVR estimation to objectively assess BOO.

Correlation between Physician-Administered International Prostate Symptoms Score and Peak Urine Flow Rate in Assessment of Benign Prostatic Enlargement Patients.

Background: To determine the correlation between international prostate symptom score (IPSS) questionnaire, completed by benign prostatic enlargement patients with the aid of their physicians and the peak urine flow rate from uroflowmetry.

Materials And Methods: This was a prospective study carried out over a period of one year (which year and which period). IPSS questionnaire was administered, and uroflowmetry done for 76 consecutive patients from urology clinic of University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) who consented to the study.
