Described as the commonest single gene cause of learning disability internationally, the incidence of Fragile X syndrome (FXS) has never previously been determined in Ireland. The aim of this work was to determine the observed incidence of FXS in the island of Ireland; the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Northern Ireland (NI) separately and combined. Ascertainment was achieved for a cross-sectional study by a retrospective, clinical and laboratory database review of positive FXS cases, born in either ROI or NI, between years 2000-2009 inclusive.

Mutations or functional inactivation of p53 seriously compromise these cellular processes and foster tumor development. p53 is the most frequently mutated gene in human cancers and over 90% of human non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) harbour p53 mutation.

We have generated cell lines with inducible expression of BRCA1 to evaluate its role in mediating the cellular response to various chemotherapeutic drugs commonly used in the treatment of breast and ovarian cancer. Induction of BRCA1 in the presence of Taxol and Vincristine resulted in a dramatic increase in cell death; an effect that was preceded by an acute arrest at the G2/M phase of the cell cycle and which correlated with BRCA1 mediated induction of GADD45.

In a nonheparinized intact canine hindlimb model we determined AT III activity by chromogenic substrate assay (S-2238); coagulation changes with fibrinogen, activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and prothrombin time (PT); and transvascular exchange by lymph-to-plasma total protein concentration ratio. Femoral venous plasma and lymph samples were assayed during 1 hour of steady state (C), 6 or 8 hours of aortoiliac occlusion (I), and 1 or 3 hours of reperfusion (R).

It may be an especially useful tool in emergency airway management by rescue squads or in the emergency department. However, in clinical practice the question has arisen as to whether prior ingestion of carbonated beverages can generate false-positive capnographic evidence of endotracheal intubation when in fact esophageal intubation has occurred.
