Importance: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are prevalent hospital-acquired infections with significant patient impacts and global health care burdens. The World Health Organization recommends using wound protector devices in abdominal surgery as a preventive measure to lower the risk of SSIs despite limited evidence.

Objective: To examine the efficacy of a dual-ring, plastic wound protector in lowering the SSI rate in open gastrointestinal (GI) surgery irrespective of intra-abdominal contamination levels.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 550 patients were analyzed, and results showed that older age, higher PI-RADS scores, and the number of biopsy cores significantly influenced the need for systematic biopsies.
  • * The conclusion suggested that for patients undergoing combined biopsies, the sextant method is preferred over the extended 12-core method if a targeted biopsy is successfully performed.

Focal enhancement typically suggests local tumor progression (LTP) after renal cell carcinoma is percutaneously ablated. However, evaluating findings that are false positive or negative of LTP is less familiar to radiologists who have little experience with renal ablation. Various imaging features are encountered during and after thermal ablation.

Background: Invisible cervical cancers on MRI can indicate less invasive surgery. Cervical cancers consist of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and non-SCC, each with different long-term outcomes. It is still unclear if surgical planning should be changed according to the histologic type of cervical cancer when it is not visible on MRI.

Renal artery stenosis (RAS) is increasingly being detected in elderly patients as life expectancy increases. RAS induces hypertension or reduces renal function. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance angiography are objective in detecting RAS but may cause iodine-induced nephrotoxicity or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in patients with RAS.

Purpose: Patients with International Metastatic RCC Database Consortium (IMDC) poor risk metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) rarely respond to first-line tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) including sunitinib, and carries a very poor prognosis. In recent years, combination therapy involving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have demonstrated superior efficacy to sunitinib in poor risk disease.

Materials And Methods: In a retrospective study using a cancer chemotherapy registry, 206 consecutive patients with mRCC in the first-line setting were identified between Oct 2019 and Dec 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • Two-week protocol biopsy in renal allograft recipients is found to be technically feasible and safe for early detection of subclinical rejection (SCR).
  • A study involving 894 biopsies showed similar rates of complications between two-week and one-year protocols, with only a slight difference in major complications.
  • Key predictors for complications include low platelet count and high blood urea nitrogen levels, highlighting the need for pre-biopsy evaluation of these factors.

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided cognitive or image fusion biopsy is performed to target a prostate imaging reporting and data system (PI-RADS) 3-5 lesion. Biopsy Gleason score (GS) is frequently underestimated compared to prostatectomy GS. However, it is still unclear about how many cores on target are necessary to reduce undergrading and if additional cores around the target may improve grade prediction on surgical specimen.

Purpose: This study was performed to compare the efficacies of newly developed needle grasper-assisted (Endo Relief) single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy (NASILA) and single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy (SILA).

Methods: This study enrolled 110 patients with acute appendicitis without periappendiceal abscess, diagnosed using computed tomography, who were randomized to the SILA (n = 54) and NASILA groups (n = 56) between December 2017 and August 2018 (6 patients withdrawn). The NASILA technique entailed a small umbilical incision for the glove port (equivalent to that for a 12-mm trocar), and a 2.

According to the recent International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system, Stage III cervical cancer indicates pelvic or paraaortic lymph node metastasis. Accordingly, the new FIGO stage accepts imaging modalities, such as MRI, as part of the FIGO 2018 updated staging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the best imaging modality to estimate the size or volume of uterine cancer because of its excellent soft tissue contrast.

Thermal ablation has been established as an alternative treatment for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in patients who are poor candidates for surgery. However, while American and European guidelines have been established for American and European patients, respectively, no ablation guidelines for Asian patients with RCCs have been established many years after the Asian Conference on Tumor Ablation (ACTA) had been held. Given that Western guidelines are difficult to apply to Asian patients due to differences in body habitus, economic status, and insurance systems, the current review sought to establish the first version of the ACTA guidelines for treating a RCC with thermal ablation.
