Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the importance of the tongue in speech and swallowing, emphasizing the need for immediate reconstruction after glossectomy for cancer to enhance quality of life.
  • It compared two surgical techniques for tongue reconstruction in patients who had undergone total glossectomy: the free vertical latissimus dorsi flap (FvLDF) and other common flaps like the radial free forearm flap (RFFF).
  • Results showed that the FvLDF provided better donor site recovery, fewer complications, and good aesthetic outcomes, making it a promising option for reconstructing tongue defects after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Cold-active bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect bacteria at low temperatures (≤4 °C), were isolated from sediment cores in the western Arctic Ocean, particularly phages ACA1 and ACA2, which thrive at just 1 °C.* -
  • These phages display typical myovirus features and have nearly identical genome sizes of about 36,825-36,826 bp, indicating a shared gene content and the presence of temperate phage characteristics that may aid in their survival.* -
  • The study reveals that even though they infect distinct bacterial hosts, the lack of cross-infection is likely due to significant genetic divergence and highlights the previously unexplored diversity of P2-like phages in polar environments

Background: Breast reconstruction using the latissimus dorsi (LD) flap is one of the most popular and common breast reconstruction techniques among Asian patients. There are increasing numbers of cases wherein breasts need to be reconstructed to moderate to large sizes among the Asian population. Most reconstructive surgeons use abdominal-based flaps-such as the deep inferior epigastric perforator and transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap, or LD flap with an implant-to supplement the volume.

Background: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially fatal clinical syndrome resulting from the damage or breakdown of skeletal muscle, which can also lead to permanent disabilities. Based on our review of studies on rhabdomyolysis after prolonged surgeries, no other cases of rhabdomyolysis caused by muscle injury in the buttock area following breast reconstruction have been reported, making the current report the first to share information related to patient conditions and treatment progress in such cases.

Case Description: Here, we present the case of a 57-year-old Asian patient with left breast cancer.

A Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated HL-MP18, was isolated from Arctic seawater after a prolonged incubation employing polypropylene as the sole carbon source. Phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain HL-MP18 was affiliated to the genus with close relatives LXJ103 (96.8 %) and KCTC 32327 (96.

ΦGT1 is a lytic podovirus of an alphaproteobacterial species, with few closely matching sequences among characterized phages, thus defying a useful description by simple sequence clustering methods. The history of the ΦGT1 core structure module was reconstructed using timetrees, including numerous related prospective prophages, to flesh out the evolutionary lineages spanning from the origin of the ejectosomal podovirus >3.2 Gya to the present genes of ΦGT1 and its closest relatives.

A sagittal fracture at the temporal root of the zygomatic arch (ZAR) often occurs as a component of zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures. However, this area is difficult to access, and anchorage is limited due to the unstable structure around it. Therefore, a preauricular approach using single-screw fixation is proposed, and this study reports its results and usefulness.

Background: Frontal sinus anterior wall defects occur because of various diseases, causing not only aesthetic problems, such as forehead bulging and upper eyelid ptosis, but also exerting physical pressure on the brain or optic nerve. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prognosis of performing split-rib bone graft for frontal sinus anterior wall defects.

Methods: This study included 30 patients who received a split-rib bone graft for a frontal sinus anterior wall defect.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated HL-LV01, was isolated from the intestinal tract content of the Pacific white shrimp . The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain HL-LV01 showed that the strain was clearly a member of the genus . According to the phylogenetic analyses, strain HL-LV01 was most closely related to the species KCTC 42508 with 98.

Background:  The latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle has a dominant pedicle with one thoracodorsal artery and receives sufficient blood by segmental circulation through several perforators. Thus, it is widely used in various reconstructive surgeries. We are reporting on the patterns of the thoracodorsal artery analyzed by chest computed tomography (CT) angiography.

Background: Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is an established safe and effective treatment of craniosynostosis (CS) deformities. However, conventional methods demonstrate some complications, such as long-term maintenance of the distractor and relapse after distractor removal. Only a few studies have overcome these limitations.

Background: A combination of the reduction mammoplasty technique and breast reconstruction allows surgeons to lift ptotic breasts through local flaps and skin reduction during surgery for breast cancer. This study presents a reliable course for the combination of partial and skin or nipple-sparing mastectomy with reduction-reconstruction surgery.

Methods: Fifty-seven patients underwent a partial mastectomy before reduction mammoplasty of both breasts during the same time period between 2014 and 2021 at our institution and thirteen patients underwent skin or nipple-sparing mastectomy, breast reconstruction with an extended latissimus dorsi flap or silicone implant, and aesthetic reduction mammoplasty of the contralateral breast during the same time period.

Background/aim: The skin protects the body from ultraviolet rays and other external factors. Various studies have been conducted to identify methods to prevent skin aging and damage. To investigate the protective effects of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), in this study, a hairless mouse model was used.

Background: Seroma is the most common complication after mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the topical application of tranexamic acid would be useful to reduce seromas in a rat mastectomy model.

Methods: Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups.

Background: We conducted a prospective cohort study to evaluate effective techniques for breast reconstruction after partial mastectomy due to breast cancer. Determining the method of reconstruction is often difficult as it depends on the location of the cancer and the amount of tissue excised..

Background: Cleft palate is a congenital malformation that causes hypernasality and decreases the intelligibility of pronunciation and leads to velopharyngeal insufficiency. It causes difficulty in language development. Many studies and treatments have been conducted to reduce this problem, but there are limitations.

Background/aim: The mechanisms underlying capsular contracture remain unclear. Emerging evidence supports the inflammation hypothesis, according to which bacteria from an adherent biofilm cause chronic inflammation and collagen deposition on the implant and trigger capsular contracture. Our goal was to evaluate the effect of different types of breast implants on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, S.

Background: Correcting a secondary bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity is very complex with many challenges due to its complexity. This study presents the surgical results after correcting a secondary bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity using isolation and repositioning of the lower lateral cartilages, the columellar strut, and an onlay graft on the nasal tip.

Method: Eighteen patients who had bilateral cleft lip nasal deformities and who had surgery performed between September 2013 and December 2019 were included in this study.

Background: The lower lateral cartilages (LLCs) are key elements for alar and tip support. Repositioning of both LLCs is an effective procedure for correcting a laterally spreading dome of LLCs and drooping nasal tip in cleft lip nasal deformity (CLND). The alar contour graft has become an essential component of rhinoplasty for correcting the concave or collapsed and retracted alar.
