Purpose: Hepatocellular carcinomas are one of the most common malignancies in the world. However, no effective therapeutic modality has been proven to prolong the survival of patients in an inoperable stage. The purpose of this study was to determine the response rate and the toxicities of a combination of pirarubicin, UFT and leucovorin in patients with non-embolizable hepatocellular carcinomas, or who had progressed during their transcatheter arterial chemoembolization treatment.

We have isolated a full-length cDNA clone that encodes for a Schizosaccharomyces pombe homolog of the dual-specificity protein kinase of the LAMMER family, lkh1 (lammer kinase homolog). The proposed Lkh1 protein contains 575 amino acids. The lkh1(+) null mutant is viable, but exhibits flocculation upon reaching stationary phase in liquid media and filamentous adhesion growth on solid media.

Mitral stenosis (MS) and mitral regurgitation (MR) are the most frequent conditions that cause a dilation and dysfunction of the left atrial appendage (LAA). Despite similarly dilated LAA in patients with MS and MR, the incidence of LAA thrombi and the risk of thromboembolism is different between these patients. The purpose of this study was to characterize the filling pattern of LAA by using intravenous administration of perfluorocarbon-exposed dextrose albumin (PESDA) during transesophageal echocardiographic examination in patients with MS and MR.

Ab initio molecular orbital and combined QM/MM Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to investigate the origin of the unusually high acidity of Meldrum's acid. Traditionally, the high acidity of Meldrum's acid relative to that of methyl malonate has been attributed to an additive effect due to the presence of two E esters in the dilactone system. However, the present study reveals that there is significant nonadditive effect that also makes major contributions.

Background: The prevalence of antibodies for hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) in adolescents and young adults has decreased remarkably following the economic growth in Korea. As a result, this age group has a high risk for HAV infection paradoxically, and over 1500 cases of clinically overt hepatitis A occurred in 1998. Human isolates of hepatitis A virus (HAV) are categorized within four genotypes (I, II, III, and VII).

To clarify the sequential changes in pRB and p16 during different stages of hepatocarcinogenesis such as fibrosis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular adenoma (HCA), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), male Fischer 344 rats were singly injected with diethylnitrosamine (DEN), immediately followed with phenobarbital for 1 wk and then thioacetamide (TAA) for 39 wk in drinking water. Rats were killed at 9, 20, 30, and 40 wk after DEN initiation and changes of pRB level, p16 gene hypermethylation, and in vivo gankyrin expression were examined. Histologic examination showed stepwise appearances of fibrosis, cirrhosis, HCA, and HCC at weeks 9, 20, 30, and 40, respectively.

Background And Aims: The Detection of hepatitis A virus (HAV) is important for diagnosis and epidemiological studies of hepatitis A. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique is a sensitive test to detect HAV-RNA in specimens. The aims of the present study were to clarify the detection rate of serum HAV-RNA by PCR and the natural history of HAV viraemia, and to determine the correlation between viraemia and the clinical characteristics in patients with acute hepatitis A.

A combined quantum mechanical (QM) and molecular mechanical (MM) method was used to study the nucleophilic addition reaction of methanethiolate to N-methylacetamide (NMA) in the gas phase and aqueous solution. At the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ//HF/6-31 + G(d) level, the ion-dipole complex was found to be the global minimum on the potential energy surface in the gas phase with a binding energy of 21.2 kcal/mol.

Objective: Cardiomyopathy, a popular diagnosis that always obscures more than it reveals, nevertheless has several characteristic histological features. These prominently include widespread focal myocardial fibrosis and associated hypertrophy of surviving cardiac myocyte. In fact, focal noninflammatory degeneration (not necrosis) has been demonstrated as a feature of many forms of cardiac hypertrophy.

Since a decade ago, apolipoprotein (apo) E polymorphism has been focussed as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. ApoE plays a central role as a receptor ligand for the uptake of lipoproteins from the circulation. There was an agreement on apoE polymorphism being one of the major risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) by its effects on lipid profiles.

The external elastic lamina (EEL) serves as a barrier for cells and macromolecules between the media and adventitia in the vascular wall. We evaluated the morphological changes and quantitative assessments of the EEL architecture in the coronary circulation of pigs fed with a high cholesterol diet. Confocal microscopy analysis of the EEL from hypercholesterolemic coronary arteries revealed an altered pattern characterized by fragmentation and disorganization of the EEL associated with an increase in the thickness.

Two sets of primers derived from the 5'-terminal region and the NS5 region of the hepatitis G virus (HGV) genome were used to amplify PCR fragments from serum specimens obtained from different parts of the world. All PCR fragments from the 5'-terminal region (5'-PCR, n = 56) and from the NS5 region (NS5-PCR, n = 85) were sequenced and compared to corresponding published HGV sequences. The range of nucleotide sequence similarity varied from 74 and 78% to 100% for 5'-PCR and NS5-PCR fragments, respectively.

For reasons not yet determined, chronic liver disease (CLD) has been a leading cause of excess morbidity and mortality in central Harlem. We conducted a case series and case-control analysis of demographic, clinical, epidemiological, and alcohol-intake-related information from patients with CLD and age- and sex-matched hospitalized control patients. Patients' sera were tested for markers of viral hepatitis.

Spontaneous intramural dissection of the oesophagus has been recognized as a separate clinical entity between a transmural oesophageal rupture (Boerhaave syndrome) and an oesophageal mucosal tear (Mallory-Weiss syndrome). It is important to differentiate this condition from myocardiac infarction, dissecting aneurysm and other acute surgical conditions. Conservative management is usually thought to be adequate.

Atherosclerosis is the most severe problem in the high-pressure systemic circulation and similar changes also occur in the high-pressure loading valve. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that early atherosclerosis, induced by a high cholesterol diet in rabbits, is characterized by significant ultrastructural change in the elastic laminae of the aortic valve. However, it is not known whether this process is also taking place in the cardiac valve at the early stage of atherosclerosis.

Objective: In the areas where intestinal metaplasia of the stomach is highly prevalent, diagnosing Barrett's esophagus solely by the presence of specialized columnar epithelium in the distal esophagus may lead to many false positive diagnoses. The aim of this study was to test validity of the specialized columnar epithelium as a diagnostic criterion of the short segment Barrett's esophagus in Korea.

Methods: During routine gastroscopy, the length of columnar-lined esophagus was measured and biopsy samples were taken from the mucosa immediately distal to the squamocolumnar junction.

Peripheral T cell lymphoma encompasses lymphomas with a variety of histologic appearances and clinical patterns. Recently, it has been suggested that almost all of the histologic features described under the name of polymorphic reticulosis(PR), lethal midline granuloma, and midline malignant reticulosis can be included in those generally described for malignant lymphomas of peripheral T cell origin(PTCL). There have been few studies of pathogenesis or tissue damage mechanism in PR patients.
