Semiochemical-based pest management programs comprise three major approaches that are being used to provide environmentally friendly control methods of insect pests: mass trapping, "lure and kill," and mating disruption. In this article, we review the potential of mass trapping in long-term pest management as well as in the eradication of invasive species. We discuss similarities and differences between mass trapping and other two main approaches of semiochemical-based pest management programs.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFCopolymerization of racemic alpha-olefins with ethylene and propylene was carried out in the presence of enantiopure C1-symmetric ansa metallocene, {1,2-(SiMe2)2(eta5-C5H-3,5-(CHMe2)2)(eta5-C5H3)}ZrCl2 to probe the effect of the polymer chain end on enantioselection for the R- or S-alpha-olefin during the kinetic resolution by polymerization catalysis. Copolymerizations with ethylene revealed that the polymer chain end is an important factor in the enantioselection of the reaction and that for homopolymerization, chain end control generally works cooperatively with enantiomorphic site control. Results from propylene copolymerizations suggested that chain end control arising from a methyl group at the beta carbon along the main chain can drastically affect selectivity, but its importance as a stereo-directing element depends on the identity of the olefin.

The relative amounts of the volatile compounds, hexyl butyrate, (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal, and (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate, absorbed by SPME as a percentage of the largest were 100%, 44%, and 4%, respectively, from females, and 83%, 37%, and 3% from males. In southern New England (USA) the invasive Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, preys on mussels (Mytlius edulis), but the crab has not yet invaded northern New England. Sample: Convenience sample of 134 infants at a southeastern quarternary children's hospital.
We measured the energy cost of mate sampling by female pronghorn (Antilocapra americana), a species for which there are no apparent direct benefits of mate choice and for which the sampling tactic most closely resembles best-of-n or comparative Bayes. We used Global Positioning System collars to record the position of individuals at 10-min intervals during the 2 weeks preceding estrus in females that actively sampled and in females that did not sample. The difference in the 2-week energy costs of these two classes of females was 8,200 (+/-2,300) kJ, or roughly one-half of the energy cost of a single day.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of individualized, developmentally supportive family-centered care on infant physiological variables, growth, behavioral stress cues, return to sleep state, medical and developmental progress, complications, resource utilization, parental perception of the neonatal intensive-care unit experience, and overall parental satisfaction.
Design: Quasi-experimental, repeated measures design.
Setting: Developmental and a control nursery in a 78-bed, level II/III neonatal intensive-care unit.
Protein-polymer conjugates are widely used in biotechnology and medicine, and new methods to prepare the bioconjugates would be advantageous for these applications. In this report, we demonstrate that bioactive "smart" polymer conjugates can be synthesized by polymerizing from defined initiation sites on proteins, thus preparing the polymer conjugates in situ. In particular, free cysteines, Cys-34 of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Cys-131 of T4 lysozyme V131C, were modified with initiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) either through a reversible disulfide linkage or irreversible bond by reaction with pyridyl disulfide- and maleimide-functionalized initiators, respectively.

Prey are often consumed by multiple predator species. Predation rates on shared prey species measured in isolation often do not combine additively due to interference or facilitation among the predator species. Furthermore, the strength of predator interactions and resulting prey mortality may change with habitat type.

In all experiments, the metabolism of CDD-0102-J was characterized based on its rate of disappearance using an HPLC assay since no metabolites have as yet been characterized. The human CYP isoenzymes used were CYP1A2, 2A6, 2B6, 2C8, 2C19, 2D6, and 3A4.

This conclusion, however, was based on experiments that examined parasites grown in media that did not contain short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) normally found in the colonic lumen. Since one of these SCFAs, butyrate, is known to affect DNA replication in eukaryotic cells, we examined the effect of SCFAs on Entamoeba trophozoite DNA content.

About 1572 moth species have been found to use 377 pheromone components, the majority being alcohols, aldehydes or acetate esters of olefinic chains of 10-22 carbons. Since there are limited numbers of possible unsaturated (double bonded) E- and Z-configured isomers of these chains, there may be constraints on incipient species evolving new pheromone components, especially if they are utilized by existing species.
