In contrast to hemostatic fabrics, foams, and gels, hemostatic spray powders may be conveniently applied on narrow and complex bleeding sites. However, powdered hemostatic agents are easily desorbed from the bleeding surface because of blood flow, which seriously decreases their hemostatic function. In this study, the hemostatic performance of a bioabsorbable powder with decreased desorption was investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how muscle and fat volume, measured through chest CT scans, affect the prognosis of breast cancer in 1460 patients diagnosed between 2001 and 2009 at the National Cancer Center in Korea.
  • Results indicated that higher skeletal muscle volume correlates with improved overall survival and recurrence-free survival rates, while factors like body mass index and fat volume did not show a significant impact on prognosis.
  • The findings suggest that maintaining higher muscle volume may be beneficial for breast cancer patients, especially among older individuals (50 years and older).

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine molecular subtype conversions in patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and analyze their clinical implications.

Materials And Methods: We included consecutive breast cancer patients who received NAC at the National Cancer Center, Korea, between August 2002 and June 2011, and had available data on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) receptor status prior to NAC. Molecular subtypes, hormone receptor (HR) status, and ER and PR Allred scores before and after NAC were compared, and the long-term outcomes were analyzed.

Curcumin has been shown to induce apoptosis in many cancer cells. However, the molecular mechanism(s) responsible for curcumin-induced apoptosis is not well understood and most probably involves several pathways. In HL-60 cells, curcumin induced apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress as evidenced by the survival molecules such as phosphorylated protein kinase-like ER-resident kinase, phosphorylated eukaryotic initiation factor-2alpha, glucose-regulated protein-78, and the apoptotic molecules such as caspase-4 and CAAT/enhancer binding protein homologous protein (CHOP).

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), a regulatory gaseous molecule that is endogenously synthesized by cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) and/or cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) from L-cysteine (L-Cys) metabolism, is a putative vasodilator, and its role in nitric oxide (NO) production is unexplored. Here, we show that at noncytotoxic concentrations, H(2)S was able to inhibit NO production and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) expression via heme oxygenase (HO-1) expression in RAW264.7 macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
