Background And Aims: We hypothesized that artificial intelligence (AI) models are more precise than standard models for predicting outcomes in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF).

Methods: We recruited ACLF patients between 2009 and 2020 from APASL-ACLF Research Consortium (AARC). Their clinical data, investigations and organ involvement were serially noted for 90-days and utilized for AI modelling.

Background: Patients with benign eyelid lesions make up a large proportion of referrals to the oculoplastic service and lend themselves well to telemedicine with assessments heavily reliant on history, observation-based examination and photographs to enable management decision-making. Our tertiary unit set up tele-oculoplastics clinics for all new patients referred for benign eyelid lesions comprising tele-consultation with antecedent patient photograph: Benign Eyelid Lesion Pathway (BELP). One year on, we describe a retrospective analysis of 974 patients looking at distinct parameters of effectiveness.

Background: Understanding the disease severity associated with the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is important in determining appropriate management strategies at the individual and population levels. We determined the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection in persons infected with the Omicron vs the Delta variant.

Methods: We identified individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection with Delta and propensity-score matched controls with Omicron variant infection from the National COVID-19 Database in Qatar.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is thought to cause less severe disease among the general population, but disease severity among at-risk populations is unknown. We performed a retrospective analysis using a matched cohort of United States veterans to compare the disease severity of subjects infected during Omicron and Delta predominant periods within 14 days of initial diagnosis. We identified 22,841 matched pairs for both periods.

Numerous diseases related to gastric distension have been found and shown to be linked with noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV). We describe the case of a 93-year-old female who came with progressively worsening shortness of breath that initially responded to NIPPV but subsequently deteriorated. Imaging revealed gaseous distension of a preexisting hiatal hernia with air-fluid levels and compressive effects on the left lower lobe of the lung.

Ensuring adequate implementation of solar energy for providing environment-friendly energy to the household sector, which can considerably abate pollutants in the environment and make power industry structure sustainable, is necessary for developing countries. Comparison in terms of environmental and cost impacts of renewable energy (hybrid solar system) with non-renewable energy sources, water and planning development authority (WAPDA), and diesel generators (DGs) has been examined in the household sector of Pakistan. Primary data of hybrid solar systems have been obtained from 10 different households segregated them into two categories according to their income as medium-income households (MIHs) and lower income households (LIHs) containing 5 kW and 3 kW of hybrid solar energy systems, respectively.

Colistin minimum inhibitory concentration among Enterobacterales and Non-fermenters was determined using the new susceptibility method, Colistin Broth Disk Elution Method (CBDE), and its sensitivity and specificity. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Pakistan Railway Hospital, Rawalpindi from October 2020 to August 2021. Gram-negative bacteria were isolated and identified using Gram Stain and standard biochemical profile.

The subventricular zone (SVZ) is the largest and most active germinal zone in the adult forebrain. Neural stem cells (NSCs) of the SVZ generate olfactory interneurons throughout life and retain the intrinsic ability to generate oligodendrocytes (OLs), the myelinating cells of the central nervous system. OLs and myelin are targets in demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).

The purpose of this study is to evaluate quality of life, the gonadotropins and estrogen levels in type 1 diabetic adolescent females. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology (BIDE). The Diabetes quality of life for youth questionnaire (DQOLY) was used to evaluate quality of life.

Blunt trauma to the kidney is usually minor and self-limiting. In some cases, the patient may present with intractable hematuria or persistent flank pain and discomfort, which necessitates aggressive management. It is very rare and unusual to find a renal arterio-venous malformation following blunt trauma.

Cytoplasmic delivery of bioactives requires the use of strategies such as active transport, electroporation, or the use of nanocarriers such as polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes, micelles, and dendrimers. It is essential to deliver bioactive molecules in the cytoplasm to achieve targeted effects by enabling organelle targeting. One of the biggest bottlenecks in the successful cytoplasmic delivery of bioactives through nanocarriers is their sequestration in the endosomes that leads to the degradation of drugs by progressing to lysosomes.

Background And Aims: Clinical characteristics and factors associated with mortality in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in countries with low case fatality rates (CFR) are unknown. We sought to determine these in a large cohort of critically ill COVID-19 patients in Qatar and explore the early mortality predictors.

Methods: We retrospectively studied the clinical characteristics and outcomes in patients admitted to the ICU at the national referral hospital for COVID-19 patients in Qatar.

In this paper, we consider an isothermal glass tube drawing model consisting of three coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. The steady-state solution of this model is required in order to investigate its stability. With the given initial and boundary conditions, it is not possible to determine an analytical solution of this model.

Background: The current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines may be less effective against the Omicron variant than against earlier variants. With recent resurgence of SARS-CoV-2 cases, the role of booster doses of the vaccine needs to be highlighted.

Methods: Using a retrospective cohort study design emulating a target trial, we determined the relative vaccine effectiveness (RVE) of a homologous booster dose of a SARS-CoV-2 messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine compared with the primary vaccine series alone in preventing infection, hospitalization, and intensive care unit admission, and death in the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system in the United States.

Agathisflavone is a flavonoid with anti-neuroinflammatory and myelinogenic properties, being also capable to induce neurogenesis. This study evaluated the therapeutic effects of agathisflavone-both as a pharmacological therapy administered and as an pre-treatment aiming to enhance rat mesenchymal stem cells (r)MSCs properties-in a rat model of acute spinal cord injury (SCI). Adult male Wistar rats ( = 6/group) underwent acute SCI with an F-2 Fogarty catheter and after 4 h were treated daily with agathisflavone (10 mg/kg ip, for 7 days), or administered with a single i.

Artificial intelligence (AI) in developing modern solutions for biomedical problems such as the prediction of human gait for human rehabilitation is gaining ground. An attempt was made to use plantar pressure information through fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors mounted on an in-sole, in tandem with a brain-computer interface (BCI) device to predict brain signals corresponding to sitting, standing and walking postures of a person. Posture classification was attained with an accuracy range between 87-93% from FBG and BCI signals using machine learning models such as K-nearest neighbor (KNN), logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and naïve Bayes (NB).
