Preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection by modulating viral host receptors, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), could represent a new chemoprophylactic approach for COVID-19 that complements vaccination. However, the mechanisms that control the expression of ACE2 remain unclear. Here we show that the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is a direct regulator of ACE2 transcription in several tissues affected by COVID-19, including the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems.

Background: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are handheld electronic vaping devices which produce an aerosol by heating an e-liquid. Some people who smoke use ECs to stop or reduce smoking, although some organizations, advocacy groups and policymakers have discouraged this, citing lack of evidence of efficacy and safety. People who smoke, healthcare providers and regulators want to know if ECs can help people quit smoking, and if they are safe to use for this purpose.

Current policy is driving renewed impetus to restore forests to return ecological function, protect species, sequester carbon and secure livelihoods. Here we assess the contribution of tree planting to ecosystem restoration in tropical and sub-tropical Asia; we synthesize evidence on mortality and growth of planted trees at 176 sites and assess structural and biodiversity recovery of co-located actively restored and naturally regenerating forest plots. Mean mortality of planted trees was 18% 1 year after planting, increasing to 44% after 5 years.

Methods: Using national administrative claims data (2016-2019), we identified children aged 6 months to 17 years with an oral antibiotic dispensed within 3 days of a new diagnosis of suppurative AOM.
Background Cardiac complications related to COVID-19 in children and adolescents include ventricular dysfunction, myocarditis, coronary artery aneurysm, and bradyarrhythmias, but tachyarrhythmias are less understood. The goal of this study was to evaluate the frequency, characteristics, and outcomes of children and adolescents experiencing tachyarrhythmias while hospitalized for acute severe COVID-19 or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. Objective: We evaluated the impact of diabetes and pancreatic inflammation on PDG and interlobular duct (ILD) cellular proliferation and profiles.
Methods: Endocrine hormone expression (insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide) and proliferating Ki67+ cells were localized within the PDG and ILD compartments by multicolor immunohistochemistry in cross-sections from the head, body, and tail regions of pancreata from those with (n = 31) or without type 1 diabetes (n = 43).
