Development of a Soft Robotics Module for Active Control of Sitting Comfort.

Sitting comfort is an important factor for passengers in selecting cars, airlines, etc. This paper proposes a soft robotic module that can be integrated into the seat cushion to provide better comfort experiences to passengers. Building on rapid manufacturing technologies and a data-driven approach, the module can be controlled to sense the applied force and the displacement of the top surface and actuate according to four designed modes.

Voluntary physical activity counteracts Chronic Heart Failure progression affecting both cardiac function and skeletal muscle in the transgenic Tgαq*44 mouse model.

Physical activity is emerging as an alternative nonpharmaceutical strategy to prevent and treat a variety of cardiovascular diseases due to its cardiac and skeletal muscle beneficial effects. Oxidative stress occurs in skeletal muscle of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients with possible impact on muscle function decline. We determined the effect of voluntary-free wheel running (VFWR) in preventing protein damage in Tgαq*44 transgenic mice (Tg) characterized by a delayed CHF progression.

Mitochondrial Adaptations in Elderly and Young Men Skeletal Muscle Following 2 Weeks of Bed Rest and Rehabilitation.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the expression levels of proteins related to mitochondrial biogenesis regulation and bioenergetics in muscle biopsies from 16 elderly and 7 young people subjected to 14 days of bed-rest, causing atrophy, and subsequent 14 days of exercise training. Based on quantitative immunoblot analyses, in both groups a reduction of two key regulators of mitochondrial biogenesis/remodeling and activity, namely PGC-1α and Sirt3, was revealed during bed-rest, with a subsequent up-regulation after rehabilitation, indicating an involvement of PGC-1α-Sirt3 axis in response to the treatments. A difference was observed comparing the young and elderly subjects as, for both proteins, the abundance in the elderly was more affected by immobility and less responsive to exercise.

Sensitivity of the foot in the flat and toe off positions.

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in pressure sensitivity for areas of the foot in a toe-off position and with the feet on the ground. This data could provide a base for adapting the softness of different areas while designing footwear. 21 healthy subjects are asked to participate in a test where a researcher applies pressure with an advanced force gauge in 20 locations on the foot until the subject starts experiencing discomfort.

Mitochondrial energy metabolism and signalling in human glioblastoma cell lines with different PTEN gene status.

Glioblastomas epidemiology and aggressiveness demand for a well characterization of biochemical mechanisms of the cells. The discovery of oxidative tumours related to chemoresistance is changing the prevalent view of dysfunctional mitochondria in cancer cells. Thus, glioblastomas metabolism is now an area of intense research, wherein was documented a high heterogeneity in energy metabolism and in particular in mitochondrial OxPhos.

Health education with older adults: action research with primary care professionals.

Objective:: To assess the development and implementation of permanent education action.

Method:: Quantitative-qualitative research based on action research in three phases (diagnosis of reality, implementation of activity and evaluation), performed with health professionals and managers of basic health units. The evaluation was on the perception of changes immediately following the activity and after 120 days.

Exercise training in Tgα*44 mice during the progression of chronic heart failure: cardiac vs. peripheral (soleus muscle) impairments to oxidative metabolism.

Cardiac function, skeletal (soleus) muscle oxidative metabolism, and the effects of exercise training were evaluated in a transgenic murine model (Tgα*44) of chronic heart failure during the critical period between the occurrence of an impairment of cardiac function and the stage at which overt cardiac failure ensues (i.e., from 10 to 12 mo of age).

F1FO ATP Synthase Is Expressed at the Surface of Embryonic Rat Heart-Derived H9c2 Cells and Is Affected by Cardiac-Like Differentiation.

Taking advantage from the peculiar features of the embryonic rat heart-derived myoblast cell line H9c2, the present study is the first to provide evidence for the expression of F1FO ATP synthase and of ATPase Inhibitory Factor 1 (IF1) on the surface of cells of cardiac origin, together documenting that they were affected through cardiac-like differentiation. Subunits of both the catalytic F1 sector of the complex (ATP synthase-β) and of the peripheral stalk, responsible for the correct F1-FO assembly/coupling, (OSCP, b, F6) were detected by immunofluorescence, together with IF1. The expression of ATP synthase-β, ATP synthase-b and F6 were similar for parental and differentiated H9c2, while the levels of OSCP increased noticeably in differentiated cells, where the results of in situ Proximity Ligation Assay were consistent with OSCP interaction within ecto-F1FO complexes.

Seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with colon adenomas in a Brazilian university hospital.

Context: The association between Helicobacter pylori infection and colon neoplasia has been the subject of recent investigations which have produced controversial results.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with colonic adenomas and also in patients whose colonoscopy exams were normal.

Background: Diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease have high incidence in the general population and are associated with various degrees of dysfunction in the immune system. It has been shown that diabetic patients with severe periodontal disease have more complications of diabetes and less effective metabolic control compared with diabetic patients with healthy gingiva. Patients with diabetes and severe periodontal disease present higher levels of serous immunoglobulin A (IgA).

Prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C markers in alcoholics with and without clinically evident hepatic cirrhosis.

We assessed the frequency of serological markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in 365 alcoholics by determining, by ELISA, the presence of HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs and anti-HCV. Fifty patients were cirrhotics and 315 had no evidence of hepatic cirrhosis; of the latter HBsAg was assessed in all, anti-HBc and anti-HBs in 130, and anti-HCV in 210. [Cholelithiasis in chronic Chageas' disease patients].

The studies on the occurrence of biliary lithiasis in patients with chronic Chagas' disease have shown conflicting results. Aiming at contributing to a better understanding of the topic was assessed, by ultrasonographic scan, the frequency of Colelithiasis in chagasic patients with different anatomo-clinical forms of the disease. A total of 128 patients were studied, 85 males (mean age: 53 +/- 13 years) and 43 females (mean age: 53 +/_ 10 years) nineteen males and 18 females had the cardiac form ; 32 males and 19 females the digestive form; 20 males and 3 females the cardiac and digestive forms simultaneously; and 14 males and 3 females the indeterminate form.

Peptic disease and Helicobacter pylori are highly prevalent in patients with the indeterminate form of Chagas' disease: report of 21 cases.

Given that chagasic patients in the indeterminate form of this disease, can have abnormal motility of the digestive tract and immunologic abnormalities, we decided to assess the frequency of peptic disease and Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in these individuals. Twenty-one individuals, 13 males and 8 females, mean age 37.6 +/- 11.

Frequency of cholelithiasis in alcoholics.

In order to determine the frequency of biliary lithiasis in alcoholic patients without signs of hepatic cirrhosis, we submitted 106 male alcoholics (mean age, 42.2 +/- 11.2 years) to ultrasound examination of the biliary system.

[Presence of Toxocara spp eggs in public squares of Uberlandia city, Minas Gerais, Brazil].

The objective of this study was to verify the presence of Toxocara spp eggs in the public squares ground in Uberlândia, region of Triângulo Mineiro, from October 1991 to January 1992. The city has 89 squares distributed in 39 boroughs. In order to have an outline of the parasite's occurrence, ground and sand (when existent) samples were collected from one square per boroughors.
