Digital Educational Support Groups Administered through WhatsApp Messenger Improve Health-Related Knowledge and Health Behaviors of New Adolescent Mothers in the Dominican Republic: A Multi-Method Study.

Background: (1)In limited-resource settings such as the Dominican Republic, many factors contribute to poor health outcomes experienced by adolescent mothers, including insufficient support and/or health knowledge. In response, we designed a digital educational support group, administered through WhatsApp Messenger, for new adolescent mothers. The purpose of this study was to assess if participation in this digital support group could improve health outcomes and health behaviors.

Establishing content for a digital educational support group for new adolescent mothers in the Dominican Republic: a user-centered design approach.

Background: As digital interventions to improve health become widespread globally, it is critical to include target end-users in their design. This can help ensure interventions are maximally beneficial among intended populations.

Objectives: To generate the content of a digital educational support group, administered through WhatsApp, for new adolescent mothers and establish participants' cellular access and WhatsApp use.

Evaluation of a comprehensive sexuality education program in La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Background: The Dominican Republic (DR) has some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and adolescent pregnancy in the Caribbean. Well-designed comprehensive sexuality education programs (CSEP) can reduce risky sexual behavior. This study sought to evaluate the Módulo Anexo Materno Infantil (MAMI) adolescent clinic's CSEP in changing knowledge of STI and pregnancy and attitudes towards risky sexual behavior following implementation.

Effect of lidocaine gel on povidone-iodine antisepsis and microbial survival.

Purpose: To determine whether the use of lidocaine gel prior to povidone-iodine antisepsis is associated with increased microbial survival.

Setting: Ophthalmology Department, Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington, USA.

Methods: A standardized suspension of Staphylococcus epidermidis was used to inoculate 5 blood agar plates that served as a control.

Treatment of traumatic LASIK flap dislocation and epithelial ingrowth with fibrin glue.

Purpose: To describe a case of a traumatic late dislocation of a laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap complicated by epithelial ingrowth.

Design: Interventional case report.

Methods: A 50-year-old woman presented 21 months after uncomplicated LASIK with painful vision loss in the right eye after minor trauma.

Lamellar interface fluid accumulation following traumatic corneal perforation and laser in situ keratomileusis.

A 41-year-old man with myopic astigmatism had laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in each eye in April 2002. Ten months later, he sustained a central perforating corneal injury to the right eye. One day following repair of the corneal wound, he presented with diffuse corneal epithelial microcystic edema, lamellar interface fluid accumulation, and 20/400 visual acuity.

Warm balanced salt solution for clearing tear film precipitation during cataract surgery.

Adequate anterior segment visualization during cataract surgery can be hindered when excessive tear film secretions precipitate on the corneal surface before the initial corneal incision is made. In most cases, room-temperature balanced salt solution applied to the corneal surface clears the debris. However, in cases in which tear film precipitates persist after the use of room-temperature balanced salt solution, the application of warm balanced salt solution can provide rapid and sustained dispersion of the precipitates.

The diagnosis and management of orbital blowout fractures: update 2001.

A cogent update of orbital blowout history, anatomy, and management are included with a retrospective study of 59 pure orbital blowout fractures which occurred between 1994 and 1998. Our goal is to provide a better understanding of this frequently encountered entity and to help augment the confidence of nonophthalmologists who will often evaluate patients with suspected orbital blowout fractures.

Purpose: To report a case of visual field defect associated with laser in situ keratomileusis.

Methods: Case report. A 28-year-old woman with high myopia (-10D) and a family history of normal tension glaucoma underwent bilateral laser in situ keratomileusis keratorefractive surgery.
