Evaluation of Sensitive Analytes to Hemolysis Interference on an Automated Chemistry Analyzer.

Background: Hemolysis is a common reason for specimen rejection in the laboratory. Our experience suggested that hemolysis (H) flag limits are too strict for some analytes leading to unnecessary specimen rejections. This study summarizes H flags for commonly rejected analytes on the Beckman Coulter DxC 700 AU analyzer.

A rare occurrence of Anaplasma-associated peritonitis.

Anaplasmosis or human granulocytic anaplasmosis is a tick-borne illness caused by the bacteria, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, resulting from an infected tick bite. Examination of a blood smear within the first week of exposure may show microcolonies of anaplasmae (morulae) in the cytoplasm of neutrophils that are highly suggestive of anaplasmosis but not definitive. We present the first case describing Anaplasma-related peritonitis and morulae in peritoneal fluid granulocytes in a peritoneal dialysis patient who developed anaplasmosis.

One movement toward sustainability consists of confining living space into a smaller ecological footprint.

Objectives: We evaluated and defined the analytical performance of the Beckman Coulter DxC 700 AU analyzer compared to the Siemens Dimension Vista 500 analyzer.

Design: and Methods: Performance characteristics included intra and inter-run precision, linearity/analytical measurement range, method correlation, and reference range verification. A total of 53 assays including 11 critical care, 19 general chemistries, 11 proteins, 10 urines, and 2 CSF analytes were tested.

Water drinking acutely improves orthostatic tolerance in healthy subjects.

Background: Orthostatic symptoms and syncope are common, even in apparently healthy subjects. In patients with severe autonomic dysfunction, water drinking elicits an acute pressor response and improves orthostatic hypotension. We tested the hypothesis that water drinking also improves orthostatic tolerance in healthy subjects.

Although most therapeutic drugs are stable, certain drugs such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital decrease in concentrations over a long storage time. To circumvent this problem, Becton-Dickinson devised a new gel formulation.

Vascular responses to orthostatic stress in patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), in patients with low orthostatic tolerance, and in asymptomatic controls.

Patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) are characterized by development of symptoms of orthostatic intolerance during standing that are not because of hypotension but are associated with tachycardia. The goal of this study was to compare the cardiac and vascular responses to orthostatic stress for patients with POTS (n = 8) with those for patients with low orthostatic tolerance (n = 29) and for healthy control subjects (n = 12). Responses of heart rate (ECG), arterial blood pressure, and brachial artery blood velocity (Doppler) were determined during a progressive orthostatic stress test of head-up tilt and lower body suction.

Single-photon emission tomography of a computerised model of pulmonary embolism.

Guamanian neurodegenerative disease: investigation of the calcium metabolism/heavy metal hypothesis.

Objective: There is a high prevalence of neurodegenerative disease (parkinsonism, dementia, and motor neuron disease) on the western Pacific island of Guam. We sought evidence in support of the hypothesis that these conditions are triggered by nutritional deficiencies of calcium and magnesium leading to secondary hyperparathyroidism that then facilitates the entry of calcium and toxic heavy metals into the brain.

Methods: We analyzed indices of calcium metabolism plus blood-serum, urine, nail, and hair heavy metal concentrations in 12 patients with Guamanian neurodegenerative disease and 12 Chamorro control subjects.

Essential and toxic element concentrations in fresh and formalin-fixed human autopsy tissues.

The concentrations of five essential elements and six potentially toxic elements were determined in seven organs collected at autopsy from 30 human subjects. Elemental analyses were carried out by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, and concentrations in fresh and formalin-fixed tissues were compared. Formalin-fixation long-term storage has little effect on most element concentrations in tissue, except for Al and Mn, which changed with prolonged storage in formalin.

[Ciprofloxacin and other antimicrobial drugs in the treatment of disseminated peritonitis].

Forty two patients with general peritonitis were treated with ciprofloxacin and combinations of various antimicrobial drugs. Ciprofloxacin had the highest effect on aerobic and anaerobic microbes in the peritoneal cavity which defined the favourable clinical results in all the patients. Moreover, there were observed no disorders in the composition of the normal intestinal microflora which in the end promoted a decrease in the number of the patients with suppuration of the surgical wound.
