Objectives: Most research addressing needs and concerns of young patients with breast cancer (≤40 years) is retrospective. The HOHO European protocol is a prospective multicenter cohort study of young women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, about fertility, psychosocial and quality of life concerns. Here we report the baseline data and focus on predictors of fertility concerns.

Methods: SAKK 26/10 is a multicenter, prospective cohort study of early breast cancer patients: Eligibility: R0-resection, ≥10% ER+ malignant cells, HER2-, pN0/pN1a. Patients were stratified into low-risk (LR) and non-low-risk (NLR) groups based on involved nodes (0 vs 1-3) and five additional predefined risk factors.
Background: The role of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) in the treatment of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and unknown EGFR mutation status has recently been questioned.
Patients And Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with unknown EGFR mutation status and long-term response (LTR) to gefitinib in the Swiss Iressa expanded access program (EAP). We assessed patient characteristics, and performed Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing on archived tumor tissue.
Purpose: Evaluation of feasibility and clinical performance of a tomosynthesis-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (TVAB) system compared to Stereotaxy (SVAB).
Materials And Methods: All biopsies were performed on consecutive patients: 148 TVAB biopsies and 86 biopsies on different patients using SVAB. Evaluation criteria for each biopsy were technical feasibility, histopathology, procedure time, and complications.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the diagnostic value of one-view digital breast tomosynthesis versus two-view full-field digital mammography (FFDM) alone, and versus a combined reading of both modalities.
Materials And Methods: The datasets of one-view digital breast tomosynthesis and two-view FFDM of abnormal mammograms in 144 consecutive women admitted for diagnostic workup with clinical signs and symptoms (n = 78) or recalled from screening (n = 66) were read alone and in a combined setting. The malignant or benign nature of the lesions was established by histologic analysis of biopsied lesions or by 12-16-month follow-up.
Objectives: The experience of a single surgeon in a rural hospital over a 10-year period was analyzed with respect to the utilization of endoscopically obtained bile aspirates as an adjunct in the diagnosis of symptomatic gallbladder disease.
Methods: A retrospective study of the author's entire cholecystectomy experience over a 10-year period with 641 patients was conducted to evaluate the utility of the bile aspirate in the preoperative selection of operative candidates and with respect to the ultimate pathologic diagnostic accuracy of the test.
Results: Derivation of preoperative diagnosis via traditional standard means was possible in 479 patients.
Background: The complete experience of a single surgeon in a rural hospital over more than 11 years was evaluated with respect to laparoscopic operations performed on pregnant patients.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of all laparoscopic operations was carried out with respect to number and types of operations, stage of pregnancy, complications, and fetal outcomes.
Results: Between October 1995 and January 2007, 36 laparoscopic operations were conducted on 36 pregnant patients.

The current level of palliative care in Germany is unsatisfactory. Health care professionals view the psychosocial support of patients and families and the collaboration amongst the different care providers as the main deficiencies. In this context little is known about the viewpoints of community pastors who might have an important role in providing psychosocial and spiritual care for patients at home.

Therefore, routinely compiled data of the largest health insurance company in the State of Lower Saxony, Germany, were analysed. Patients with lung, colon, breast and prostate cancer were included, who died in the year of 2004.

Up to the present, the assessment of perceived deficits predominantly reflects the point of view of experts in the palliative and hospice movement, with very little being known about the perspective of other professionals. The aim of this study was to assess the points of view of a wide range of different health care providers who treated or interacted with palliative care patients.

They claim that the education in palliative care of all involved professional groups should be improved and specialized services should be adjusted. Only few is known in this context about the perspectives and attitudes of nursing staff, who is significantly involved in palliative care.

Apart from the experts' opinions, little is known in this context about the perspectives of hospital doctors working in different disciplines, such as surgery, internal medicine, gynaecology or anaesthesia. These doctors presumably treat many incurably ill patients with palliative care needs, but they usually have very little experience in palliative medicine.

In this context, structural, cultural and content-related deficits are increasingly taken into account in the German health care system, however, there is a lack of scientific data. Therefore, it was the objective of an expert team at Hannover Medical School to analyse the current situation of palliative care in Lower Saxony from the perspective of health system research and to give recommendations for its further development, based on empirical studies in Lower Saxony and on a systematic national and international literature review.

This cost-of-illness analysis for eating disorders in Germany considers hospitalization, rehabilitation services, and indirect costs through inability to work and premature death. The cost estimates are based on projections derived from benefit data as listed by health insurance schemes and pension insurance schemes and from epidemiological studies on the prevalence of eating disorders and mortality rates.

In Germany, congenital hearing disorders are usually detected too late resulting in insufficient therapy of the disorder. To investigate these problems, the Federal Ministry of Health and the principal associations of statutory health insurance commissioned a pre-operative study. The study's aim is to verify whether introduction of a universal new-born hearing screening results in earlier diagnosis of hearing disorders and thus improves medical care for children with impaired hearing.

This article reviews the current opinion on risk assessment and management of women with an increased risk of breast/ovarian cancer. Management options are given for women at slightly, moderately and highly elevated breast cancer risk, as well as for BRCA1/2 carriers, based on currently available evidence.

Objectives: The incidence of AD was investigated in 97% of all school entrants (n = 4219) in the city of Hannover, Germany, with regard to the influence of individual and environmental factors.
Recently randomized trials show an overall survival advantage of 30% for cisplatin-based chemotherapy given concurrently with radiation therapy. Current data do not allow to conclude which drugs could be best combined with cisplatin. Here we report the very long-term results of a prospective phase II trial of concurrent radiochemotherapy in advanced cancer of the cervix.

In one American study (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, NSABP-P1) tamoxifen decreased the incidence of invasive and non-invasive breast cancer, whereas in two English and Italian studies, it did not reduce this risk. Differences in the study population for the trials may underly these conflicting findings. New drugs, the SERMs, may be more promising.

Background And Objective: Despite eager public interest there have been few significant studies about the views of the German population on active euthanasia. It was our purpose to investigate, before undertaking a representative enquiry about this controversial and ethically sensitive topic, to what extent public opinion and the underlying norms, values and preferences can be adequately obtained by standardized data collection. COHORT AND METHODS: An interdisciplinary project group established a standardized written form of enquiry for measuring public opinion about active euthanasia.
