Heavy metals and metalloids are increasingly recognised as a threat to avian health, especially in species at the top of the food chain such as vultures. Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus) are ideal bioindicators for studying environmental contamination due to their scavenging habits and territorial behavior. In this study, we analysed the concentrations of six trace elements (Cd, Pb, Cr, Sb, Ni, and Cu) in feathers, pectoral plumage, and blood samples of Griffon Vultures from a captive environment in Sicily, Southern Italy, using an ICP-MS method.

Article Synopsis
  • Cord blood platelets, collected from non-suitable blood units for stem cell use, are rich in growth factors and may streamline the production of platelet lysate for wound healing applications.
  • The study analyzed the effects of pooled pathogen-reduced lyophilized cord blood platelet lysate (PRL-CBPL) and compared it with single donor cord blood platelet lysate (SD-CBPL) on various cell types essential for wound healing.
  • Results indicated that PRL-CBPL was effective for cell growth with optimal concentrations varying by cell type, while heparin enhanced the effects mainly in SD-CBPL, and both lysates increased monocyte migration in a dose-dependent manner.

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array.

In this study, we investigate the role of microwave cooking in reducing mycotoxin contamination in plant-based food matrices, with a focus on veggie burgers (purchased and home-made) and their ingredients (soybean, potatoes, zucchini, carrots). Two different conditions were studied (Max-Min) that were 800 W for 60 s and 800 W for 90 s, respectively. The degradation patterns of aflatoxins (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, AFG2), fumonisins (FB1, FB2, FB3), trichothecenes (T2, HT2, ZEA), and ochratoxin A (OTA) were studied.

The escalating phenomenon of migration, accompanied by a disturbing surge in associated tragedies, has persistently violated internationally protected human rights. Absence of physical evidence, namely the presence of adequately identified corpses, may impede the full enjoyment of human rights and-in some cases-the course of justice as it obstructs the initiation of legal proceedings against individuals implicated in causing such catastrophes. It also presents administrative obstacles, as death certificates are indispensable in legitimizing statuses like orphanhood and widowhood.

Instantons, which are nonperturbative solutions to Yang-Mills equations, provide a signal for the occurrence of quantum tunneling between distinct classes of vacua. They can give rise to decays of particles otherwise forbidden. Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory, we search for signatures of such instanton-induced processes that would be suggestive of super-heavy particles decaying in the Galactic halo.

Plasminogen is a protein involved in intravascular and extravascular fibrinolysis, as well as in wound healing, cell migration, tissue formation and angiogenesis. In recent years its role in healing of tympanic perforations has been demonstrated in plasminogen deficient mice. The aim of this work was to fabricate a fibrin-based drug delivery system able to provide a local and sustained release of plasminogen at the wound site.

We present the first measurement of the fluctuations in the number of muons in extensive air showers produced by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. We find that the measured fluctuations are in good agreement with predictions from air shower simulations. This observation provides new insights into the origin of the previously reported deficit of muons in air shower simulations and constrains models of hadronic interactions at ultrahigh energies.

Platelets contain abundant growth factors and cytokines that have a positive influence on the migration and proliferation of different cell types by modulating its physiopathological processes. As it is known that human umbilical cord blood platelet lysate (UCB-PL) contains a supraphysiological concentration of growth factors, in the present study, we investigated its effectiveness in wound-healing processes. Human UCB-PL was obtained by the freeze/thaw of platelet concentrate (1.
