Microfilaria in the Urine of a Dog with Concurrent Urinary Bladder Sarcoma.

A 12 yr old female spayed American Staffordshire terrier was referred for stranguria, pollakiuria, and concern for a mass in the trigone of the urinary bladder. A urinalysis and abdominal ultrasound were performed to further investigate the bladder mass. Nematode larvae were identified in the urine, termed microfilaruria, while a caudal abdominal mass was found on ultrasound impinging on the urethra.

Tetrodotoxin toxicity: an increasing threat.

A man aged in his sixties presented to the emergency department with vomiting, dizziness and generalised weakness preceded by perioral and peripheral paraesthesias for several hours. He did not speak English and was visiting from overseas. Examination revealed multidirectional nystagmus, subtle bilateral ptosis, marked bilateral upper limb dysmetria and heel-shin ataxia, with mild proximal limb weakness.

Background: Gut microbiome modulation is a promising strategy for enhancing the response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). Fecal microbiota transplant studies have shown positive signals of improved outcomes in both ICB-naïve and refractory melanoma patients; however, this strategy is challenging to scale. Diet is a key determinant of the gut microbiota, and we have previously shown that (a) habitual high dietary fiber intake is associated with an improved response to ICB and (b) fiber manipulation in mice impacts antitumor immunity.

This study describes the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and symptom-specific functional impairment of patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) in a real-world setting. US-based adults with PNH treated with a parenterally administered complement inhibitor (PACI) for ≥ 6 months completed an online, cross-sectional, observational survey; a subset of patients also participated in semi-structured qualitative interviews. The survey included the PROMIS 29 + 2 Profile v2.

Antimony-bearing schwertmannite transformation to goethite: A driver of antimony mobilization in acid mine drainage.

Antimony(V) mobility in acid mine drainage (AMD) is often controlled by sorption and coprecipitation with schwertmannite - a poorly-ordered Fe(III) oxyhydroxysulfate mineral. However, due to its metastable nature, schwertmannite transforms over time to more thermodynamically stable Fe(III) phases, such as goethite. This study examines how transformation of Sb(V)-bearing schwertmannite to goethite impacts Sb(V) mobility, while also assessing the role that Sb(V) may play in stabilizing schwertmannite against such transformation.

Implementing Competency-Based Veterinary Education: A Survey of AAVMC Member Institutions on Opportunities, Challenges, and Strategies for Success.

Competency-based education is increasingly being adopted across the health professions. A model for competency-based education in veterinary medicine was recently developed by a working group of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) and is being used in institutions worldwide. The purpose of this study was to gather information on progress in and barriers to implementing competency-based education (including use of the AAVMC competency-based veterinary education [CBVE] Model) by AAVMC member schools to inform the development of strategies to support institutions in successful implementation of the CBVE Model.

Unlabelled: Local parks offer outdoor spaces for active play; they provide a common attractive space in which grandparents and grandchildren can interact and engage in physical activity. This study investigated how multigenerational active spaces within local parks were being used by older people, their grandchildren, and other age groups.

Method: This study was an observational design using direct observations of park visitors over three consecutive months and an intercept survey of a subsample of older visitors in six community parks in Victoria, Australia.

Antimony(V) sorption and coprecipitation with ferrihydrite: An examination of retention mechanisms and the selectivity of commonly-applied extraction procedures.

We investigated the mechanisms that control Sb(V) sorption and coprecipitation with ferrihydrite across a range of Sb(V) loadings, and examined the associated effects on Sb(V) extractability during the commonly-applied 1 M HCl extraction scheme and the BCR and Wenzel sequential extraction schemes. EXAFS spectroscopy reveals that Sb(V) sorption and coprecipitation mainly involved Sb(V) incorporation into the ferrihydrite structure via edge sharing and double-corner sharing between SbO and FeO octahedra. Large amounts of these linkages partially stabilized ferrihydrite against extraction with 1 M HCl.

Purpose: Uncontrolled hypertension causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Several prescribing guidelines have been created to address this, however, prescriber adherence to guidelines is influenced by various sociodemographic patient factors. This study aims to determine the effects of these patient factors on prescriber adherence to antihypertensive prescription guidelines.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an incurable neurodegenerative disease characterized by 4-repeat (0N/4R)-Tau protein accumulation in CNS neurons. We generated transgenic zebrafish expressing human 0N/4R-Tau to investigate PSP pathophysiology. Tau zebrafish replicated multiple features of PSP, including: decreased survival; hypokinesia; impaired optokinetic responses; neurodegeneration; neuroinflammation; synapse loss; and Tau hyperphosphorylation, misfolding, mislocalization, insolubility, truncation, and oligomerization.

Changing the focus: Facilitating engagement in physical activity for people living with mild dementia in a local community-Protocol for a pre-post mixed methods feasibility study.

This study aims to address and improve the low physical activity levels among people with mild dementia by implementing a novel shared decision-making and motivational support program, named "Changing the Focus". It will utilise a pre-post mixed methods approach, aiming to recruit 60 community living older people with mild dementia and their care-partners. The shared decision-making process will involve the person living with dementia, their care-partner, and a research therapist, using a purpose-designed discussion tool including factors such as preferred physical activities, health status, local opportunities and program accessibility.

Blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are the most medically and economically important vectors in North America. Each of their 3 life stages requires a blood meal from one of many potential host species, during which they can acquire or transmit pathogens. Host species, however, vary tremendously in their quality for ticks, as measured by differences in feeding and molting success.
