Aims: To investigate the distribution of alpha and pi class glutathione S-transferases (GST) in normal fetal, neonatal, and adult liver; and to examine changes in GST expression in neonatal liver disease.
Methods: alpha and pi class GST were immunolocalised in sections of formalin fixed liver tissue obtained from human fetuses (n = 21), neonates (n = 8), young children (n = 9) and adults (n = 10), and from neonates with extrahepatic biliary atresia (n = 15) and neonatal hepatitis (n = 12). Monospecific rabbit polyclonal antibodies were used with a peroxidase-antiperoxidase method.
The peripheral blood of a 3 month old boy with disseminated tuberculosis showed CD30 positive monocytes on flow cytometric analysis. His liver contained CD30 positive staining macrophages and giant cells. CD30 is an activation antigen which has not been previously found on peripheral blood monocytes.

Ninety-seven of these patients received prophylactic low dose subcutaneous heparin and 3 patients were excluded because of noted complications. We report on a detailed survey of protein heterozygosity in Canadian freshwater fish and mammals. A simple one-way analysis showed substantial variance among species. However, a two-way analysis of species and proteins showed that there was little if any variance among species or among proteins, but a very large species-protein interaction.

This protein can be localized immunohistochemically in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded material using a monoclonal antibody NCL-CB11; positive membrane staining correlates with gene amplification and protein overexpression in breast cancer. Using this technique we have shown that only 2/26 (8%) of hepatocellular carcinomas, 0/10 (0%) of cholangiocarcinomas and 0/2 (0%) hepatoblastomas overexpressed c-erbB-2 as evidenced by membrane staining.

In rat liver these cells express the intermediate filament protein desmin; this is now widely used as an immunohistochemical marker for these cells. It has been shown that in experimental models of acute and chronic liver injury there is an increase in the number of desmin-positive perisinusoidal cells prior to the deposition of matrix proteins; however, these studies have failed to establish whether local proliferation is involved in this expansion of the desmin-positive perisinusoidal cell population.

This conclusion is unjustified: the null hypothesis of no adaptation, that the absence of conspicuous sexual signals has resulted from the absence of selective pressures maintaining such adaptations, is both more parsimonious and better fits the facts. The related suggestion that there has been adaptation among females to conceal ovulation from their own consciousness is also unjustified.

It is found that neurotropic drugs, whose molecules have positively-charged amino groups and a considerable hydrophobic region (in size), can be incorporated into the phospholipid bilayers. This results in a decrease of the lifetime of Pr3+ cations in the membrane-associated state. No correlation was found to exist between local anaesthesia activity of the study drugs and its capability of displacement polyvalent cations from the membrane surface.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe distribution of two major basement membrane components, type IV collagen and laminin, was studied within the perisinusoidal space of Disse in normal human liver using (i) an immunoperoxidase method for light microscopy and (ii) immunogold labelling for ultrastructural localisation. Although immunoreactivity depended on the mode of tissue fixation, both proteins could be identified at this site using a panel of affinity purified antibodies. These findings indicate that these proteins are normal constituents of the perisinusoidal extracellular matrix, and refute the hypothesis that capillarization of the sinusoids in chronic liver disease results from neo-expression of laminin in the space of Disse.

Here we examine the role of the visual input in the maintenance of the compensated state. Exposure of acutely compensated animals to illumination from below (IFB) or infra-red illumination (IRI) elicited a decompensation: whereas IRI was no longer effective 4 days after HL, the susceptibility to IFB disappeared slowly over a number of weeks.

Measurements of cardiac function and Symptom Checklist-90R (SCL-90R) data were retrospectively analyzed in two independent groups of cardiac transplant candidates in an effort to identify organic correlates of depressive syndromes. In the first study, no significant inverse correlations were found between depression measures and cardiac index as had been predicted. However, elevated right atrial pressure was associated with increased scores of the SCL-90R depression subscale (DEP) and global symptom index (GSI).

The infantile cholangiopathies are a group of conditions associated with neonatal jaundice, which include extrahepatic biliary atresia, paucity of intra-hepatic bile ducts and disorders associated with persistence of fetal biliary structures, the so-called ductal plate malformations. Although previously regarded as distinct entities, it has recently been suggested that they may represent parts of a disease spectrum in which the principal process is one of bile duct destruction, the morphological manifestations in individual cases being influenced by the stage of intra-uterine development at which such injury occurs and by the site within the biliary system at which there is maximum damage. To further examine this concept, we have studied liver biopsy specimens from 37 neonates with extrahepatic biliary atresia, with particular reference to abnormalities of the intrahepatic bile ducts.
