Nature-based interventions (NBIs) are becoming a common mental health care referral option; however, little is known about the barriers to participation. Research reveals a concentration of evidence on the practical barriers with a paucity of guidance on the personal barriers as experienced by service users. This review explores what is known on the psychological, psychosocial and physical barriers as disclosed by adult mental health service users and the various stakeholders involved in NBI.

Objective: Fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5) modulates adipocyte metabolism by increasing white and brown adipose tissue (WAT and BAT) browning and activity, respectively. We investigated whether FNDC5 can regulate visceral WAT and BAT adaptive thermogenesis by improving mitochondrial homeostasis in response to cold and obesity.

Methods: Adipose tissue expression of FNDC5 and factors involved in mitochondrial homeostasis were determined in patients with normal weight and obesity (n = 159) and in rats with diet-induced obesity after 1 week of cold exposure (n = 61).

Article Synopsis
  • - Excess body fat contributes to the development of colon cancer (CC) by increasing the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β, which is linked to obesity-related inflammation and tumor growth.
  • - A study involving human samples and a rat model showed that obesity and CC both significantly elevate IL-1β levels in adipose tissue and colon, with weight loss leading to a decrease in IL-1β expression.
  • - Treating colon cancer cells (HT-29) with IL-1β and substances from obese patients' fat cells promoted inflammatory markers and reduced anti-inflammatory gene expression, highlighting IL-1β's role in driving inflammation linked to obesity and CC.

Proteins can be targeted for degradation by engineering biomolecules that direct them to the eukaryotic ubiquitination machinery. For instance, the fusion of an E3 ubiquitin ligase to a suitable target binding domain creates a 'biological Proteolysis-Targeting Chimera' (bioPROTAC). Here we employ an analogous approach where the target protein is recruited directly to a human E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme via an attached target binding domain.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated vaccination rates for military dependents under 24 months, finding that only 74.4% completed the recommended 7-vaccine series, with 36.2% experiencing delays.
  • The lowest completion rates were for specific vaccines like rotavirus and diphtheria, while completion peaked for children born in 2016-2017.
  • Factors affecting vaccination completion included younger parental age and changes in well-child care locations, indicating ongoing barriers in the military health system.

Associative learning depends on contingency, the degree to which a stimulus predicts an outcome. Despite its importance, the neural mechanisms linking contingency to behavior remain elusive. Here we examined the dopamine activity in the ventral striatum - a signal implicated in associative learning - in a Pavlovian contingency degradation task in mice.

All life must solve how to allocate limited energy resources to maximize benefits from scarce opportunities. Economic theory posits decision makers optimize choice by maximizing the subjective benefit (utility) of reward minus the subjective cost (disutility) of the required effort. While successful in many settings, this model does not fully account for how experience can alter reward-effort trade-offs.

Background: The biological mediators supporting the resolution of liver steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis after bariatric surgery in patients with obesity and NAFLD remain unclear. We sought to analyze whether uroguanylin and guanylin, two gut hormones involved in the regulation of satiety, food preference and adiposity, are involved in the amelioration of obesity-associated NAFLD after bariatric surgery.

Methods: Proguanylin (GUCA2A) and prouroguanylin (GUCA2B) were measured in 214 participants undergoing bariatric surgery with biopsy-proven NAFLD diagnosis.

Introduction: Obesity contributes to ectopic fat deposition in non-adipose organs, including the pancreas. Pancreas steatosis associates with inflammation and β-cell dysfunction, contributing to the onset of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. An improvement of pancreatic steatosis and indices of insulin resistance is observed following bariatric surgery, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.

This study investigates carbon partitioning in the developing endosperm of a European variety of spring wheat subjected to moderately elevated daytime temperatures (27°C/16°C d/night) from anthesis to grain maturity. Elevated daytime temperatures caused significant reductions in both fresh and dry weights and reduced the starch content of harvested grains compared to plants grown under a 20°C/16°C d/night regimen. Accelerated grain development caused by elevated temperatures was accounted for by representing plant development as thermal time (°C DPA).

Background: Trauma continues to place a burden on individuals, communities and health care systems around the world. To help reduce this burden and improve care, trauma registries in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand collect standardized data on patients admitted with Injury Severity Scores greater than 12. There is currently no agreed minimum data set for trauma patients with Injury Severity Score less than 13, representing an opportunity to provide more data for quality improvement and injury prevention.

Netrin (NTN)-1, an extracellular matrix protein with a crucial role in inflammation, is dysregulated during obesity (OB) and influences colon cancer (CC) progression. To decipher the mechanisms underlying CC development during obesity, we examined the expression of and its receptors in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) of 74 (25 normal weight (NW)) (16 with CC) and 49 patients with OB (12 with CC). We also evaluated the effect of caloric restriction (CR) on the gene expression levels of and its receptors in the colon from a rat model fed a normal diet.

Objective: To evaluate the potential for adverse health outcomes among infants born to US Coast Guard (USCG) responders to the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill disaster.

Methods: Department of Defense Birth and Infant Health Research programme data identified a cohort of singleton infants born 2010-2011 to USCG personnel in the DWH Oil Spill Coast Guard Cohort study. Infants were included if their military parent ('sponsor') responded to the oil spill during a selected reproductive exposure window (ie, 3 months preconception for male sponsors and periconception through pregnancy for female sponsors), or if their sponsor was a non-responder.

Reprogramming of microspores development towards embryogenesis mediated by stress treatment constitutes the basis of doubled haploid production. Recently, compounds that alter histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) have been reported to enhance microspore embryogenesis (ME), by altering histones acetylation or methylation. However, epigenetic mechanisms underlying ME induction efficiency are poorly understood.

Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) have emerged as one of the most innovative new genetic drug modalities. However, their high molecular weight limits their bioavailability for otherwise-treatable neurological disorders. We investigated conjugation of ASOs to an antibody against the murine transferrin receptor, 8D3130, and evaluated it via systemic administration in mouse models of the neurodegenerative disease spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Trauma care is evolving throughout the world to meet the demand resulting from rapidly increasing rates of mortality and morbidity related to external injuries. The State Major Trauma Service was designated to Royal Perth Hospital in 2004 to provide comprehensive care for trauma patients in Western Australia (WA), which is the largest state by area in the country. The State Major Trauma Unit, which was established in 2008, functions as a level I center and admits over 1,000 major trauma patients per year, making it the second busiest trauma center in Australia.

Objectives: Adequate risk adjustment for factors beyond the control of the healthcare system contributes to the process of transparent and equitable benchmarking of trauma outcomes. Current risk adjustment models are not optimal in terms of the number and nature of predictor variables included in the model and the treatment of missing data. We propose a statistically robust and parsimonious risk adjustment model for the purpose of benchmarking.

Energy restriction is a first therapy in the treatment of obesity, but the underlying biological mechanisms have not been completely clarified. We analyzed the effects of restriction of high-fat diet (HFD) on weight loss, circulating gut hormone levels and expression of hypothalamic neuropeptides. Ten-week-old male Wistar rats ( = 40) were randomly distributed into four groups: two fed ad libitum a normal diet (ND) (N group) or a HFD (H group) and two subjected to a 25% caloric restriction of ND (NR group) or HFD (HR group) for 9 weeks.

As resin-based composites (RBC) replace dental amalgam for environmental reasons, there is a requirement to understand the environmental impact of this alternative dental restorative material. In this study we standardize the simultaneous detection of five monomeric components associated with RBCs using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Factors affecting method performance (detection wavelength, calibration conditions, method sensitivity/accuracy/precision, extraction time/efficiency) are evaluated using standard solutions containing the mixture of TEGDMA, UDMA, Bis-GMA, BPA and HEMA.
