Background: Whether pathophysiological factors differ between males and females with irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea (IBS-D) remains to be tested. To better understand potential sex differences, males with IBS-D were compared to naturally cycling females and to females with IBS-D taking hormonal contraception on plasma levels of cytokines and gut microbiome characteristics.
Methods: Males and females with Rome III IBS-D completed questionnaires and kept a daily symptom diary for 28 days.
Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) in blood encompass DNA, RNA, and protein biomarkers, but clinical utility is limited by their rarity. To enable tumor epitope-agnostic interrogation of large blood volumes, we developed a high-throughput microfluidic device, depleting hematopoietic cells through high-flow channels and force-amplifying magnetic lenses. Here, we apply this technology to analyze patient-derived leukapheresis products, interrogating a mean blood volume of 5.

In the present study, we identified ten patients with early stage, resectable, non-small cell lung cancer who presented with multiple, anatomically distinct, EGFR-mutant tumors. We analyzed the phylogenetic relationships among multiple tumors from each patient using whole-exome sequencing (WES) and hypermutable poly(guanine) (poly(G)) repeat genotyping as orthogonal methods for lineage tracing.

However, there is limited supporting evidence to suggest that alcohol use is associated with suboptimal outcomes after operative repair of rotator cuff tears. Rat shoulders have been demonstrated as consistent and reliable models for studying rotator cuff disease.

Dysregulated signaling of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor, tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), has been implicated in somatic-psychological symptoms in individuals with IBS. We investigated the association of 10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the regulatory 3' untranslated region of neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase-2 (NTRK2) kinase domain-deficient truncated isoform (TrkB.

We tested whether taxa differentially abundant between females with IBS vs healthy control females (HC) are associated with daily gastrointestinal and psychological symptom severity. Participants (age 18-50 year) completed a 3-day food record and collected a stool sample during the follicular phase.

However, the clinical utility of tumor cell-based liquid biopsy has been limited since CTCs are very rare, and current technologies cannot process the blood volumes required to isolate a sufficient number of tumor cells for in-depth assays. We previously described a high-throughput microfluidic prototype utilizing high-flow channels and amplification of cell sorting forces through magnetic lenses.

While the development of multiple primary tumors in smokers with lung cancer can be attributed to carcinogen-induced field cancerization, the occurrence of multiple primary tumors in individuals with -mutant lung cancer who lack known environmental exposures remains unexplained. We identified ten patients with early-stage, resectable non-small cell lung cancer who presented with multiple anatomically distinct -mutant tumors. We analyzed the phylogenetic relationships among multiple tumors from each patient using whole exome sequencing (WES) and hypermutable poly-guanine (poly-G) repeat genotyping, as orthogonal methods for lineage tracing.

This study aimed to (1) compare sleep-wake behaviors among IBD patients based on endoscopic and clinical disease activity and (2) describe associations between actigraphy, self-reported sleep measures, and symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Participants wore a wrist actigraph for 10 consecutive days and completed self-reported sleep questionnaires (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI] and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures System [PROMIS] Sleep Disturbance and Sleep Interference questionnaires).

Previous measures of assessing the impact of rotator cuff pathology on sleep have been largely subjective in nature. This study was undertaken to objectively analyze this relationship through the use of activity monitors.

There is limited research on operational PI risk mitigation strategies. The purpose of this study was to (1) compare a prototype mattress (AirSupport) designed for operational conditions versus the foldable Talon litter and Warrior Evacuation Litter Pad (WELP) on PI risk factors and (2) determine whether the Talon + AirSupport pad was noninferior and superior to the Talon + WELP on skin interface pressure.

It often co-occurs with extraintestinal somatic and psychological symptoms. However, the nature of the interrelationships among these symptoms is unclear.

Whether TGF-β in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME) induces senescence in cancer and how the ensuing senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) remodels the cellular TME to influence immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) responses are unknown. We show that TGF-β induces a deeper senescent state under hypoxia than under normoxia; deep senescence correlates with the degree of E2F suppression and is marked by multinucleation, reduced reentry into proliferation, and a distinct 14-gene SASP.

Prior studies have demonstrated higher rates of vitamin D deficiency in individuals with IBS compared to healthy controls (HC), as well as associations of vitamin D concentration with IBS symptoms. A systematic review of 10 mouse and 14 human studies reported a positive association between vitamin D (serum levels and supplementation) and beta diversity of gut microbiome in a variety of conditions.

Background: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survivorship results in unique issues in return to physical and psychological function. The purpose of the study was to compare recovery across the first year between SCA survivors and other arrhythmia patients who received a first-time implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) for secondary prevention, participating in a social cognitive theory (SCT) intervention.
Methods: 168 (129 males, 39 females) who received an ICD for secondary prevention (SCA N = 65; other arrhythmia N = 103) were randomized to one of two study conditions: SCT intervention (N = 85) or usual care (N = 83).
: Survivors of acute respiratory failure (ARF) experience long-term cognitive impairment and circadian rhythm disturbance after hospital discharge. Although prior studies in aging and neurodegenerative diseases indicate actigraphy-estimated rest-activity circadian rhythm disturbances are risk factors for cognitive impairment, it is unclear if this applies to ARF survivors. This study explored the relationships of actigraphy-estimated rest-activity circadian rhythms with cognitive functioning in ARF survivors at 3 months after discharge.
