The following essay examines health communication outreach for LGBTQ+ college students through analyzing both the design and exit evaluation of a federally funded United States public health program. SHARE-Pride was a three-year health intervention program that served LGBTQ+ students ages 18-24 at Southern University (SU)-a Hispanic and Minority Serving Institution. Because of structural barriers creating sexual health and drug and alcohol consumption risks, SHARE-Pride (SP) used a peer advocate model for students to develop mentoring relationships with LGBTQ+ peers to increase health knowledge.

Although the adult brain contains neural stem cells (NSCs) that generate new neurons throughout life, these astrocyte-like populations are restricted to two discrete niches. Despite their terminally differentiated phenotype, adult parenchymal astrocytes can re-acquire NSC-like characteristics following injury, and as such, these 'reactive' astrocytes offer an alternative source of cells for central nervous system (CNS) repair following injury or disease. Adult neural stem cell (aNSC) activity is tuned by external stimuli through the recruitment of transcription factors. This study examines the RE1 silencing transcription factor (REST) in neural stem/progenitor cells isolated from the subventricular zone of adult mouse brain and provides the first extensive characterization of REST-mediated control of the cellular and molecular properties. This study shows that REST knockdown affects the capacity of progenitor cells to generate neurospheres, reduces cell proliferation, and triggers cell differentiation despite the presence of growth factors.

The objective of this work was to investigate the role of acidic residues within the exposed middle segment of the central helix of cTnC in (1) cTnC-cTnI interactions, (2) Ca(2+) binding and exchange with the regulatory N-domain of cTnC in increasingly complex biochemical systems, and (3) ability of the cTn complex to regulate actomyosin ATPase. In order to achieve this objective, we introduced the D87A/D88A and E94A/E95A/E96A mutations into the central helix of cTnC. The D87A/D88A and E94A/E95A/E96A mutations decreased affinity of cTnC for the regulatory region of cTnI.

A cardinal property of neural stem cells (NSCs) is their ability to adopt multiple fates upon differentiation. The epigenome is widely seen as a read-out of cellular potential and a manifestation of this can be seen in embryonic stem cells (ESCs), where promoters of many lineage-specific regulators are marked by a bivalent epigenetic signature comprising trimethylation of both lysine 4 and lysine 27 of histone H3 (H3K4me3 and H3K27me3, respectively). Bivalency has subsequently emerged as a powerful epigenetic indicator of stem cell potential.

Objective: Has the recent availability of newborn hemoglobinopathy screening results within patient electronic medical records (EMR) of birth hospitals facilitated follow-up by primary care pediatric providers?

Methods: An online survey of all 137 primary care pediatric providers at a New York City academic medical center was conducted in 2008-2009 to assess practices for hemoglobin-apathy trait follow-up. Physicians were resurveyed 1 year later, following educational outreach and a letter of instruction underscoring the availability of screening results in the EMR. All 62 primary care pediatricians were surveyed at a nearby city hospital for comparison.

The rule states that CMS will implement a quality incentive program (QIP) for Medicare outpatient end-stage renal disease (ESRD) dialysis providers and facilities with payment consequences beginning January 1, 2012. This is in accordance with section 1881(h) of the Act (added on July 15, 2008 by section 153(c) of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA)). Polymer-assisted solution-phase (PASP) parallel library synthesis was used to discover a piperazinyl glutamate pyridine as a P2Y(12) antagonist. Exploitation of this lead provided compounds with excellent inhibition of platelet aggregation as measured in a human platelet rich plasma (PRP) assay. Pharmacokinetic and physiochemical properties were optimized through modifications at the 4-position of the pyridine ring and the terminal nitrogen of the piperazine ring, leading to compound (4S)-4-[({4-[4-(methoxymethyl)piperidin-1-yl]-6-phenylpyridin-2-yl}carbonyl)amino]-5-oxo-5-{4-[(pentyloxy)carbonyl]piperazin-1-yl}pentanoic acid 47s with good human PRP potency, selectivity, in vivo efficacy, and oral bioavailability.
