Prioritizing Technology in Pharmacy Education: A Document Analysis of Strategic Plans.

The COVID-19 pandemic has required many pharmacy programs to increase their utilization of technology or shift the course of delivery entirely online. Delivery in this setting has exposed areas in the use of technology where pharmacy programs need to improve (such as staff and student training). This study performed a document analysis of strategic plans to identify technology-related strategies and where gaps in planning currently exist.

The Use of Gentamicin for Treatment of Urogenital and Extragenital Gonorrhea: A Systematic Review of Efficacy Data.

Objective: To evaluate clinical efficacy data for gentamicin in the treatment of gonorrhea.

Data Sources: A keyword search of PubMed (1966 to April 2020), EMBASE (1947 to April 2020), and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (1970 to April 2020) was conducted. The electronic search was supplemented with manual screening of references from identified articles and a search of ClinicalTrials.

2'-Deoxy purine, 2'-O-methyl pyrimidine (dRmY) aptamers as candidate therapeutics.

Aptamers are short oligonucleotides that fold into well-defined three-dimensional architectures thereby enabling specific binding to molecular targets such as proteins. To be successful as a novel therapeutic modality, it is important for aptamers to not only bind their targets with high specificity and affinity, but also to exhibit favorable properties with respect to in vivo stability, cost-effective synthesis, and tolerability (i.e.

Characterization of Cry34/Cry35 binary insecticidal proteins from diverse Bacillus thuringiensis strain collections.

Bacillus thuringiensis crystal proteins of the Cry34 and Cry35 classes function as binary toxins showing activity on the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte. We surveyed 6,499 B. thuringiensis isolates by hybridization for sequences related to cry35A genes, identifying 78 strains.

Direct in vitro selection of a 2'-O-methyl aptamer to VEGF.

Aptamers (protein binding oligonucleotides) have potential as a new class of targeted therapeutics. For applications requiring chronic systemic administration, aptamers must achieve high-affinity target binding while simultaneously retaining high in vivo stability, tolerability, and ease of chemical synthesis. To this end, we describe a method for generating aptamers composed entirely of 2'-O-methyl nucleotides (mRmY).

Renin, aldosterone and arginine vasopressin in patients with liver cirrhosis: the influence of ascites retransfusion.

Plasma renin activity (PRA), and concentrations of aldosterone (PAL) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) in plasma were determined in 15 patients with ascites due to cirrhosis. The concentrations in ascites were analyzed simultaneously. Six patients were studied during extracorporeal ascites retransfusion.

Leukodystrophy, skin hyperpigmentation, and adrenal atrophy: Siemerling-Creutzfeldt disease. Transmission through several generations in two families.

Two apparently unrelated families with a history of leukodystrophy associated with adrenal insufficiency are presented. Only about 20 cases of this syndrome have been reported until now. It was first described by Siemerling and Creutzfeldt; therefore we propose the designation Siemerling-Creutzfeldt disease.

[Paroxysmal ACTH secretion from an adrenal medullary tumour (author's transl)].

A secondary Cushing's syndrome developed in a 38-year-old woman from an ACTH secreting phaeochromocytoma. Large amounts of ACTH were demonstrated in the tumour by radioimmunological tests. A remarkable feature was that clinical and biochemical signs of increased catecholamine secretion completely regressed with time and the adrenals were stimulated at intervals by the ectopic ACTH secretion, steroid excretion falling to normal in between.

[Familial glucocorticoid insufficiency (author's transl)].

Familial glucocortivoid insufficiency--also called hereditary lack of response of the adrenals to ACTH-has not yet been described in Europe. Isolated glucocorticoid insufficiency combined with intact secretion of aldosterone and high plasma level of ACTH are characteristic. The diagnostic difficulties are demonstrated by the deaths before diagnosis of 13 siblings of 21 patients from 9 families.

Following head injuries with various degrees of cerebral trauma increased STH-concentrations of plasma can be measured. Blood glucose values are elevated reflecting a diabetic metabolism lead to a suppressive effect of increased STH-blood levels. In general it can be stated, that a stress situation is followed by an increase of STH-secretion despite of elevated blood glucose concentrations.
