Background: Advancements in machine learning (ML) have improved the accuracy of models that predict human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence. These models have used electronic medical records and registries. We aim to broaden the application of these tools by using deidentified public health datasets for notifiable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) from a southern US county known for high HIV incidence.

Factors impacting neurosurgery residents' operative case volume: a nationwide survey.

Objective: Neurological surgery residency remains one of the most competitive and longest specialties in terms of training in medicine. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education uses residents' case volume throughout residency as one of its measures for the quality of surgical training. The objective was to study the variability of residency case volume among US training programs and to analyze the factors that potentially influence that case volume.

Exploring and verifying the acoustic presence of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) off Elephant Island, Antarctica.

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) can be used to monitor acoustic presence and behaviour of cetaceans, providing continuous, long-term, and seasonally unbiased data. The efficiency of PAM methods, however, depends on the ability to detect and correctly interpret acoustic signals. The upcall is the most prevalent vocalization of the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) and is commonly used as a basis for PAM studies on this species.

Disruption of the left anterior ventrolateral temporal cortex along with the inferior longitudinal fasciculus impairs the ability to retrieve famous face names: Evidence from three longitudinal case studies.

The cortical distribution of the proper name (PN) retrieval network has been widely studied contrary to its connectional anatomy. Here, we report the case of three patients with a low-grade glioma damaging the mid-to-anterior part of the left temporal lobe. A longitudinal behavioural assessment showed that the surgery caused a long-lasting decline in PN retrieval performances in all patients.

Unsuccessful retrieval of proper names (PNs) is commonly observed in patients suffering from neurological conditions such as stroke or epilepsy. Traumatic Subarachnoid-Pleural Fistula with Pneumocephalus.

Traumatic subarachnoid-pleural fistula is an uncommon occurrence. We present a case of a patient sustaining a subarachnoid-pleural fistula after a gunshot wound to the neck, which ultimately resulted in substantial pneumocephalus. The patient underwent successful operative repair of the fistula with notable improvement and resolution of pneumocephalus.

Specialized inpatient treatment for young people with early psychosis: acute-treatment and 12-month results.

The objective of the study was to investigate the development of clinical outcomes of young people with early psychosis in a specialized inpatient treatment and assess the feasibility of such an intervention in an inpatient setting. The study was a prospective cohort study of patients with early psychosis treated at the specialized inpatient treatment "Fühinterventions-und Therapiezentrum, FRITZ" (early intervention and therapy center) in Berlin, Germany. The primary outcomes were attitudes towards psychiatric medication and patient satisfaction with treatment after 6 weeks.

Clinical Risk Constellations for the Development of Bipolar Disorders.

The early recognition of psychiatric disorders has been a focus of research in the last decades and has led to improvements in clinical care, especially in the area of early psychosis. Like non-affective psychosis, bipolar disorders are often diagnosed with a delay that can lead to long periods of untreated illness and impact long-term outcomes. This article presents the rationale for early recognition in bipolar disorder and presents the current evidence for the identification of risk factors, their assessment and validity in predicting the onset of bipolar disorder.

Toxoplasma gondii, Herpesviridae and long-term risk of transition to first-episode psychosis in an ultra high-risk sample.

Background: Ultra high-risk (UHR) criteria were introduced to identify people at imminent risk of developing psychosis. To improve prognostic accuracy, additional clinical and biological risk factors have been researched. Associations between psychotic disorders and infections with Toxoplasma gondii and Herpesviridae have been found.

Seasonal and diel cycles of fin whale acoustic occurrence near Elephant Island, Antarctica.

This study investigates the relevance of the Elephant Island (EI) region for Southern Hemisphere fin whales () in their annual life cycle. We collected 3 years of passive acoustic recordings (January 2013 to February 2016) northwest of EI to calculate time series of fin whale acoustic indices, daily acoustic occurrence, spectrograms, as well as the abundance of their 20 Hz pulses. Acoustic backscatter strength, sea ice concentration and chlorophyll-a composites provided concurrent environmental information for graphic comparisons.

The inferior longitudinal fasciculus: anatomy, function and surgical considerations.

The inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) is a large association white matter tract that interconnects, in a bidirectional manner, the occipital cortex to anterior temporal structures. In view of both its pattern of cortical projections and its recently evidenced multilayered anatomical organization, the ILF has been supposed to be vital for maintaining a wide range of cognitive and affective processes operating on the visual modality. As tumors commonly damage the temporal cortex, an updated knowledge of the functional anatomy of this ventral tract is needed to better map and monitor on-line its potential functions and thus to improve surgical outcomes.

Functional anatomy of the frontal aslant tract and surgical perspectives.

The frontal aslant tract (FAT) is an intralobar white matter fasciculus providing dense connections between the medial part of the superior frontal gyrus, in particular the presupplementary motor area (SMA) and the SMA proper, and the lateral part of the frontal lobe, especially the inferior frontal gyrus. Although this tract has been characterized belatedly, it has received important attention in recent years due notably to its increasingly evidenced role in the speech and language networks. As cerebral tumors frequently affect the frontal lobe, an improved knowledge of the functional anatomy of the FAT is mandatory to refine the way neurosurgeries are performed and to give the patients the best opportunities to recover after surgery.

The relationship between cannabis use and cognition in people diagnosed with first-episode psychosis.

Cannabis use is highly prevalent among young people diagnosed with first-episode psychosis (FEP), however, its impact on cognition is still unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the association of cannabis use with cognition in people diagnosed with FEP. We extended previous research findings by operationalising the comorbid cannabis use, considering recency of cannabis use and use of other illicit substances and including people with a broad spectrum of psychotic diagnoses.

Traumatic atlantoaxial dislocation without associated odontoid fracture or neurologic deficit is rare. We present the case of a 39-year-old male pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle and sustained a traumatic grade 4 C1-2 retrolisthesis. Closed reduction was successful, and the patient underwent posterior occipitocervical fusion.

Creativity in persons at-risk for bipolar disorder-A pilot study.

Aim: The association between bipolar disorder and creativity may be related to symptoms of the disorder itself or personality traits present before the onset. To further explore the relationship between creativity and clinical risk for bipolar disorder, creativity among individuals with a history of depressive disorder and varying risk for future (hypo-)manic episodes was assessed and compared.

Methods: Thirty-eight participants completed the diagnostic process, including Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) Diagnosis, Hamilton Depression Scale and Young Mania Rating Scale.

Background: The present study evaluated service use of our newly established Early Intervention and Treatment Centre (FRITZ) in Berlin for young adults with first or early psychosis with and without migration background.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of in-patients with early psychosis who were admitted to FRITZ between May 2014 and May 2015. We investigated the proportion of patients with migration background, sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients.

Identification of a novel feline large granular lymphoma cell line (S87) as non-MHC-restricted cytotoxic T-cell line and assessment of its genetic instability.

Feline large granular lymphocyte lymphomas are rare but very aggressive tumors with a poor prognosis. In this study, a cell line from an abdominal effusion of a cat with large granular lymphoma was characterized. Immunophenotype staining was positive for CD3 and CD45R, and negative for CD4, CD8, CD56, CD79α, BLA.

Metals other than uranium affected microbial community composition in a historical uranium-mining site.

To understand the links between the long-term impact of uranium and other metals on microbial community composition, ground- and surface water-influenced soils varying greatly in uranium and metal concentrations were investigated at the former uranium-mining district in Ronneburg, Germany. Humpback whales migrate between relatively unproductive tropical or temperate breeding grounds and productive high latitude feeding areas. However, not all individuals of a population undertake the annual migration to the breeding grounds; instead some are thought to remain on the feeding grounds year-round, presumably to avoid the energetic demands of migration. In the Southern Hemisphere, ice and inclement weather conditions restrict investigations of humpback whale presence on feeding grounds as well as the extent of their southern range.

Automatic round-the-clock detection of whales for mitigation from underwater noise impacts.

Loud hydroacoustic sources, such as naval mid-frequency sonars or airguns for marine geophysical prospecting, have been increasingly criticized for their possible negative effects on marine mammals and were implicated in several whale stranding events. Competent authorities now regularly request the implementation of mitigation measures, including the shut-down of acoustic sources when marine mammals are sighted within a predefined exclusion zone. Commonly, ship-based marine mammal observers (MMOs) are employed to visually monitor this zone.
