Species composition and concentration of rumen ciliate protozoa were investigated in the rumen contents of 14 domestic sheep and 1 goat living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. This is the first report on rumen ciliates from ruminants living in Kyrgyzstan. In sheep 12 genera, 28 species and 12 morphotypes were detected, whereas in goat 8 genera, 12 species and 4 morphotypes were detected.

A total of 16 species of protozoa were found in blue wildebeest with Dasytricha ruminantium, Opisthotrichum janus and Ostracodinium gracile occurring in all four animals. By transferring every 12 or 24 h, culture pH was gradually decreased until the protozoa disappeared. The cultures were transferred by placing half of the culture into an equal volume of fresh medium, resulting in pH fluctuations similar to those in the rumen, resulting from fermentation, eating, and saliva production.

Most previously reported generation times for rumen ciliate protozoa are longer than would be required to prevent their being flushed out of the rumen. In an earlier study from this lab, using a sequential transfer procedure, generation times between 12 and 13 h were determined for both Epidinium caudatum and Entodinium caudatum. This would permit these species to be maintained in a rumen with a fluid volume turnover rate as rapid as twice a day.

A study was carried out to determine if the protozoal fauna of indigenous African wild ruminants was different from that found in their domestic counterparts and if the animal's diet influenced the number and types of protozoa. Samples of rumen contents were collected in 1997 and 2001 from various indigenous African wild ruminants in Kenya. All three ruminant feeding types were sampled: browsers or concentrate selectors (giraffe and Guenther's dik-dik); intermediate or adaptable mixed feeders (impala, Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle and eland); grass or roughage eaters (hartebeest and wildebeest).

Rumen contents obtained from 28 domesticated cattle (Bos taurus L.) slaughtered at abatoirs near Izmir, Turkey were surveyed for ciliate protozoa. Protozoa are known to make an appreciable contribution to ruminal fiber digestion in many different geographical areas; however, little if any information is available on their occurrence in Turkish cattle.
