Background: Cognitive impairment, colloquially termed "brain fog", is one of the most prevalent manifestations of post-Covid syndrome and a major contributor to impaired daily function and reduced quality of life. However, despite the high numbers of affected individuals presenting to clinical services with cognitive impairment, little work has been undertaken to date on the suitability of current memory clinic tests for identifying the cognitive deficits in this new acquired cognitive disorder. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the performance of people with post-Covid syndrome presenting with cognitive impairment on the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III (ACE-III), a cognitive test used widely in memory clinics.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Northern Territory (NT) of Australia has the highest alcohol consumption and injury rates, leading to a study on alcohol-related injury (ARI) hospitalisations from 2007 to 2022 to assess the relationship between alcohol and injuries, and the impact of alcohol policies.
  • - Findings revealed that 22.6% of all injury hospitalisations were linked to alcohol, with assaults being the primary cause (46%), and a significant decline in ARI hospitalisations was noted in Central Australia after implementing alcohol policies in 2017-2018.
  • - The study emphasizes the effectiveness of these alcohol policies in reducing ARI hospitalisations in Central Australia, suggesting the need for sustained efforts to combat alcohol-related harm.

Background: Acute illness states with increased metabolic demand can precipitate severe thiamine deficiency if physiologic needs exceed endogenous stores and supplementation. Patients with preexisting risk factors such as parenteral nutrition (PN) dependence, eating disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, or surgeries are especially vulnerable.

Case Summary: A 9-year-old girl with short bowel syndrome receiving long-term PN, including standard thiamine supplementation, presented with refractory shock following aspiration.

Introduction: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is underdiagnosed globally resulting in missed treatment opportunities and adverse clinical outcomes. We describe the protocol for a study which aims to co-design, implement and conduct an evaluation of a task-sharing approach to echocardiographic active case finding for early detection and management of RHD in high-risk settings in Australia and Timor-Leste.

Methods And Analysis: Echocardiograms will be obtained by trained local staff using hand-held echocardiographic devices employing the 'Single Parasternal Long Axis view with a Sweep of the Heart' (SPLASH) technique and interpreted by experts remote from the site of acquisition.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assesses the prevalence of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders in Australia using data from two national surveys conducted in 2007 and 2020-2022, noting significant patterns and correlations.
  • - Approximately 46% of individuals with a mental or substance use disorder also had multiple diagnosable conditions, with little change in overall prevalence since 2007, although young adults aged 16-24 showed a significant increase in co-occurrence.
  • - The findings indicate that co-occurring disorders are still a major issue in Australia, especially among younger individuals, highlighting the need for ongoing development of interventions that address broader societal and contextual influences.

Background: The fossil record provides the unique opportunity to observe evolution over millions of years, but is known to be incomplete. While incompleteness varies spatially and is hard to estimate for empirical sections, computer simulations of geological processes can be used to examine the effects of the incompleteness in silico. We combine simulations of different modes of evolution (stasis, (un)biased random walks) with deposition of carbonate platforms strata to examine how well the mode of evolution can be recovered from fossil time series, and how test results vary between different positions in the carbonate platform and multiple stratigraphic architectures generated by different sea level curves.

Introduction: Recommendations for chaperone use during sensitive exams have been left mostly to individual institutions, despite a paucity of data providing guidance. The purpose of this study was to survey patients and medical providers on their attitudes toward chaperone use and explore factors that may influence these attitudes.

Materials And Methods: A survey was administered at a single tertiary military medical center to providers and patients across multiple specialties, and further sub-analysis of the data were completed.

Background: The 5-year results of this trial showed that adjuvant therapy with dabrafenib plus trametinib resulted in longer relapse-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival than placebo among patients with V600-mutated stage III melanoma. Longer-term data were needed, including data regarding overall survival.

Methods: We randomly assigned 870 patients with resected stage III melanoma with V600 mutations to receive 12 months of dabrafenib (150 mg twice daily) plus trametinib (2 mg once daily) or two matched placebos.

Current research suggests that menstruating female athletes might be at greater risk of musculoskeletal injury in relation to hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle. A separate body of work suggests that spatial cognition might also fluctuate in a similar manner. Changes in spatial cognition could, in theory, be a contributing risk factor for injury, especially in fast-paced sports that require precise, millisecond accuracy in interactions with moving objects in the environment.

Each new generation of grassland managers could benefit from an improved understanding of how modification of nitrogen application and harvest dates in response to different weather and soil conditions will affect grass yields and quality. The purpose of this study was to develop a freely available grass yield simulation model, validated for England and Wales, and to examine its strengths and weaknesses as a teaching tool for improving grass management. The model, called LINGRA-N-Plus, was implemented in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and iteratively evaluated by students and practitioners (farmers, consultants, and researchers) in a series of workshops across the UK over 2 years.

Aims: Timely access to surgery is an essential part of healthcare. People living with mental health (MH) conditions may have higher rates of chronic illness requiring surgical care but also face barriers to care. There is limited evidence about whether unequal surgical access contributes to health inequalities in this group.

Introduction: School-based exercise interventions targeted at reducing obesity are often successful in the short term, but they are resource-heavy and do not always lead to long-lasting behaviour changes. This study investigated the effect of reducing sedentary time, rather than increasing exercise, on physical activity (PA) behaviours and obesity in primary school children.

Methods: Thirty UK state primary schools participated in this cluster-controlled intervention study (IDACI score = 0.
