Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the orbit in an infant.

We present the case of an infant with rapidly progressing orbital tumor that had initial radiological and clinical features of both rhabdomyosarcoma and capillary hemangioma. The patient was eventually diagnosed with malignant rhabdoid tumor of the orbit. We discuss the salient histological and radiological features of our case and review the literature on orbital malignant rhabdoid tumors.

A case of Lemierre's syndrome causing panhypopituitarism, cavernous sinus thrombosis, ischaemic stroke and pulmonary embolism.

Infection is a rare cause of panhypopituitarism and has not been reported in the context of Lemierre's syndrome. We present the case of a previously well 19-year-old man, who presented acutely unwell with meningitis and sepsis. was isolated from peripheral blood cultures and identified on cerebrospinal fluid with 16S rDNA Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

Emerging Gene Manipulation Strategies for the Treatment of Monogenic Eye Disease.

Genetic eye diseases, representing a wide spectrum of simple and complex conditions, are one of the leading causes of visual loss in children and working adults, and progress in the field has led to changes in disease investigation, diagnosis, and management. The past 15 years have seen the emergence of novel therapies for these previously untreatable conditions to the extent that we now have a licensed therapy for one form of genetic eye disease and many more in clinical trial. This is a systematic review of published and ongoing clinical trials of gene therapies for monogenic eye diseases.

Comparative Analysis of Capillary vs Venous Blood for Serologic Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies by RPOC Lateral Flow Tests.

A comparison of rapid point-of-care serology tests using finger prick and venous blood was done on 278 participants. In a laboratory setting, immunoglobulin G (IgG) sensitivity neared 100%; however, IgG sensitivity dramatically dropped (82%) in field testing. Possible factors include finger prick volume variability, hemolysis, cassette readability, and operator training.

Background: The primary aim was to estimate the incidence of primary and secondary childhood glaucoma in Scotland over a 2-year period. The secondary aim was to gauge the confidence and experience of ophthalmologists in Scotland in managing these patients.

Methods: A 7 question electronic survey was distributed to all consultant members of the Scottish Paediatric Club and Scottish Glaucoma Club.

Paediatric cataracts can present a diagnostic dilemma to ophthalmologists. Next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) has been promoted as a tool to expedite the diagnosis of an underlying cause in such cases. The authors present an unusual case of bilateral cataracts in an 11-year-old girl as the first presenting feature of new type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Descriptive study of opioid-acetaminophen prescription patterns at the providence VA Medical Center.

Background: Prescription opioid-acetaminophen products account for the majority of cases of acetaminophen-related acute liver failure in the United States. We sought to examine the frequency of opioid-acetaminophen overuse at the Providence VA Medical Center and improve the quality and safety of opioid-acetaminophen prescription practices in a system employing electronic health records and e-prescribing.

Results: During fiscal year 2011, the Providence VA pharmacy dispensed a total of 19,841 acetaminophen prescriptions to a total of 4455 different patients.

Robust classification of neonatal apnoea-related desaturations.

Respiratory signals monitored in the neonatal intensive care units are usually ignored due to the high prevalence of noise and false alarms (FA). Apneic events are generally therefore indicated by a pulse oximeter alarm reacting to the subsequent desaturation. However, the high FA rate in the photoplethysmogram may desensitize staff, reducing the reaction speed.

Prevalence of Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli on the external packaging of raw meat.

During September and October 2002, 3,662 prepackaged raw meat samples were collected to evaluate the extent and nature of microbiological contamination on external surfaces of the packaging, which could potentially cross-contaminate ready-to-eat foods during and after purchase. Salmonella was detected on two (<1%) samples of external packaging (both from raw chicken), and Campylobacter was detected on 41 (1.1%) samples of external packaging.

Microbiological examination of ready-to-eat cold sliced meats and pâté from catering and retail premises in the UK.

Aims: To establish the microbiological quality of cold ready-to-eat sliced meats and pâté from catering and retail premises, and investigate links hypothesized between foodborne Campylobacter infection and the consumption of cold sliced meats.

Methods And Results: A total of 4078 cold meat and pâté samples were collected and examined according to a standardized protocol. Comparison with published microbiological guidelines revealed that most ready-to-eat meat and pâté samples (75%) were of satisfactory/acceptable microbiological quality and 25% were of unsatisfactory/unacceptable quality.
