No prediction without prevention: A global qualitative study of attitudes toward using a prediction tool for risk of developing depression during adolescence.

Given the rate of advancement in predictive psychiatry, there is a threat that it outpaces public and professional willingness for use in clinical care and public health. Prediction tools in psychiatry estimate the risk of future development of mental health conditions. Prediction tools used with young populations have the potential to reduce the worldwide burden of depression.

Professional judgement: a social practice perspective on a multiple mini-interview for specialty training selection.

Background: Interviewers' judgements play a critical role in competency-based assessments for selection such as the multiple-mini-interview (MMI). Much of the published research focuses on the psychometrics of selection and the impact of rater subjectivity. Within the context of selecting for entry into specialty postgraduate training, we used an interpretivist and socio-constructivist approach to explore how and why interviewers make judgments in high stakes selection settings whilst taking part in an MMI.

Definition of sinonasal and otological exacerbation in patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia: an expert consensus.

Background: Recurrent infections of the nose, sinuses and ears are common problems for people with primary ciliary dyskinesia. While pulmonary exacerbations in primary ciliary dyskinesia are defined, there is no definition for ear-nose-throat exacerbations, a potential outcome for research and clinical trials.

Methods: We set up an expert panel of 24 ear-nose-throat specialists, respiratory physicians, other healthcare professionals and patients to develop consensus definitions of sinonasal and otological exacerbations in children and adults with primary ciliary dyskinesia for research settings.

The GATA-3-dependent transcriptome and tumor microenvironment are regulated by eIF4E and XPO1 in T-cell lymphomas.

The transcription factor GATA-3 and the transcriptional program it regulates have emerged as oncogenic drivers across diverse T-cell lymphomas (TCL), many of which are resistant to conventional chemotherapeutic agents and characterized by recurrent losses of key tumor suppressor genes, including TP53 and PTEN, both of which are clients of the nuclear export protein XPO1. Here we demonstrated that XPO1 is highly expressed by malignant T cells expressing GATA-3 and by lymphoma-associated macrophages (LAM) within their tumor microenvironment (TME). Using complementary genetically engineered mouse (GEM) models, we demonstrated that TP53 and/or PTEN deficient TCL, and LAM within their TME, are sensitive to the selective XPO1 antagonist selinexor.

Identifying Patient Safety Competencies for Healthcare Staff Treating Children and Young People With Intellectual Disability in Hospitals: A Delphi Study.

Background: Children and young people with intellectual disability have poor healthcare and are at risk of patient safety events due to lack of staff training and consensus on competencies for safe and quality care. For the adoption of reasonable adjustments in mainstream paediatric healthcare clinical competencies needed to be adapted to an existing patient safety education framework.

Methods: Thirteen experts in intellectual disability health and patient safety participated in an eDelphi survey aimed at reaching consensus on core competencies required of the paediatric healthcare workforce.

Associations between non-anaemic iron deficiency and outcomes following elective surgery for colorectal cancer: a prospective cohort study.

Background: Iron deficiency is present in up to 75% of patients presenting for colorectal cancer surgery. It is unclear whether iron deficiency without anaemia is associated with worse postoperative outcomes. We hypothesised that, in adults without anaemia undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer, iron deficiency would be associated with worse postoperative outcomes relative to an iron-replete state.

Murdered Elder Indigenous Women and Legal Outcomes.

This qualitative descriptive analysis examines 33 cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women aged 50 years and older. The cases encompassed single murders, multiple murders, and mass stabbing events. The study found that the offender was known and/or identified in the majority of cases, with a significant portion resulting in guilty pleas or jury convictions.

The impact of faecal diversion on the gut microbiome: a systematic review.

Diversion of the faecal stream is associated with diversion colitis (DC). Preliminary studies indicate that microbiome dysbiosis contributes to its development and potentially treatment. This review aims to characterise these changes in the context of faecal diversion and identify their clinical impact.

Clinical utility and psychometric properties of tools for early detection of developmental concerns and disability in young children: A scoping review.

Aim: To explore the clinical utility and psychometric properties of standardized tools for the early detection of developmental concerns or disability in young children.

Method: Systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines containing psychometric data on tools appropriate for use with children from birth to 5 years 11 months were searched for in MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycINFO for the years 2000 to 2023, with no language restrictions.

Results: Eighty-six systematic reviews and six clinical practice guidelines guided identification of tools.

Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol Exposures Reported to US Poison Centers: Variations Among US States and Regions and Associations with Public Policy.

Introduction: This study investigated exposures involving ∆8-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆8-THC) reported to US poison centers (PCs), including variation among states and regions. It evaluated whether the ∆8-THC exposure rate was lower among states with ∆8-THC regulations and states where cannabis (∆9-THC) use was legal.

Methods: National Poison Data System data for ∆8-THC exposures in 2021-2022 were analyzed, including comparisons of state and regional population-based exposure rates.

Cortical spheroids show strain-dependent cell viability loss and neurite disruption following sustained compression injury.

Sustained compressive injury (SCI) in the brain is observed in numerous injury and pathological scenarios, including tumors, ischemic stroke, and traumatic brain injury-related tissue swelling. Sustained compressive injury is characterized by tissue loading over time, and currently, there are few in vitro models suitable to study neural cell responses to strain-dependent sustained compressive injury. Here, we present an in vitro model of sustained compressive neural injury via centrifugation.

Treatment Adherence Rates and Long-Term Mortality in a Quaternary Multidisciplinary Heart Team: An Observational Cohort.

Background: A multidisciplinary heart team (HT) approach to patients with complex coronary artery disease has a class IB recommendation, yet there are limited data on adherence to HT treatment recommendations and long-term clinical follow-up. The objective of this study was to assess adherence rates to HT recommendations and assess long-term mortality rates among patients with complex CAD.

Methods And Results: Six hundred eighty-four sequential HT cases for complex coronary artery disease from January 2015 to May 2017 were reviewed.

Tilted-Plane Structure of the Energy of Finite Quantum Systems.

The piecewise linearity condition on the total energy with respect to the total magnetization of finite quantum systems is derived using the infinite-separation-limit technique. This generalizes the well-known constancy condition, related to static correlation error, in approximate density functional theory. The magnetic analog of Koopmans' theorem in density functional theory is also derived.

Nudiviruses in free-living and parasitic arthropods: evolutionary taxonomy.

The nudiviruses (family: Nudiviridae) are large double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses that infect insects and crustaceans, and have most recently been identified from ectoparasitic members (fleas and lice). This virus family was created in 2014 and has since been expanded via the discovery of multiple novel viral candidates or accepted members, sparking the need for a new taxonomic and evolutionary overview. Using current information (including data from public databases), we construct a new comprehensive phylogeny, encompassing 49 different nudiviruses.

Centering Equity and Fostering Stakeholder Collaboration and Trust-Pillars of the Maternal Health Innovation Program in Maryland.

Objective: To describe two main pillars of the Maryland Maternal Health Innovation Program (MDMOM): (1) centering equity and (2) fostering broad stakeholder collaboration and trust.

Methods: We summarized MDMOM's key activities and used severe maternal morbidity (SMM) surveillance and program monitoring data to quantify MDMOM's work on the two pillars. We developed measures of hospital engagement with MDMOM (participation in quality improvement [QI] activities, participation in check-in meetings, staff involvement) and with other partners (participation in QI activities, representation in state-level groups).

Stillbirth affects 1 in 175 pregnancies in the United States. There are significant racial and ethnic disparities in rates of stillbirth. Rates of stillbirth are highest among non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander and non-Hispanic Black women, more than twice the rate of non-Hispanic White women.

Patient experiences with telehealth treatment for opioid use disorder in Alabama.

Introduction: Telehealth-only provision of buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) was first made possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Alabama instituted a law in July 2022 that mandated an annual in-person visit in order to receive this treatment. In July 2023, our usually telehealth-only group established a temporary clinic in Birmingham to meet this requirement.

Reduced effectiveness of permethrin-treated military uniforms after prolonged wear measured by contact irritancy and toxicity bioassays with Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs.

Factory-treated permethrin uniforms are the primary method used by the US Army to prevent arthropod bites and transmission of arthropod-borne diseases. In this study previously worn uniforms were collected from cadets at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY to determine the amount of permethrin remaining after prolonged wear and subsequent effects on ticks. Six trousers were collected from cadets in the sophomore, junior, and senior classes.

The behavioral and neurobiological relationships between executive function and reading: A review and preliminary findings.

Despite decades of prior research, the mechanisms for how skilled reading develops remain elusive. Numerous studies have identified word recognition and oral language ability as key components to explain later reading comprehension performance. However, these components alone do not fully explain differences in reading achievement.

Application of deep learning for the analysis of stomata: a review of current methods and future directions.

Plant physiology and metabolism rely on the function of stomata, structures on the surface of above-ground organs that facilitate the exchange of gases with the atmosphere. The morphology of the guard cells and corresponding pore that make up the stomata, as well as the density (number per unit area), are critical in determining overall gas exchange capacity. These characteristics can be quantified visually from images captured using microscopy, traditionally relying on time-consuming manual analysis.

Platform-directed allostery and quaternary structure dynamics of SAMHD1 catalysis.

SAMHD1 regulates cellular nucleotide homeostasis, controlling dNTP levels by catalysing their hydrolysis into 2'-deoxynucleosides and triphosphate. In differentiated CD4+ macrophage and resting T-cells SAMHD1 activity results in the inhibition of HIV-1 infection through a dNTP blockade. In cancer, SAMHD1 desensitizes cells to nucleoside-analogue chemotherapies.
