The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) is a thin shell of gap junction coupled GABAergic inhibitory neurons that regulate afferent sensory relay of the thalamus. The TRN receives dopaminergic innervation from the midbrain, and it is known to express high concentrations of D1 and D4 receptors. Although dopaminergic modulation of presynaptic inputs to TRN has been described, the direct effect of dopamine on TRN neurons and its electrical synapses is largely unknown.

Tumor cell phagocytosis by macrophages is considered a relevant mechanism of action for many therapeutic IgG antibodies. However, tumor cells employ several mechanisms to evade immune recognition, including hypersialylation. Here, we describe how reduction of sialic acid exposure on tumor cells promotes antibody-dependent tumor cell phagocytosis (ADCP) by macrophages.

Article Synopsis
  • A mental health study in western Kenya tested the feasibility of delivering treatments for major depression and PTSD through non-specialist staff in primary care settings, incorporating both in-person and mobile health (mHealth) options due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The chosen intervention involved either psychotherapy (Interpersonal Psychotherapy) or medication (fluoxetine), with 2,162 public sector primary care patients participating.
  • A secondary analysis assessed participants' preferences for mHealth or in-person treatment, exploring their reasons for choosing one method over the other and comparing demographic and clinical characteristics between the two groups.

This study reports an imaging method for gigahertz surface acoustic waves in transparent layers using infrared subpicosecond laser pulses in the ablation regime and an optical pump-probe technique. The reflectivity modulations due to the photoelastic effect of generated multimodal surface acoustic waves were imaged by an sCMOS camera illuminated by the time-delayed, frequency-doubled probe pulses. Moving the delay time between , image stacks of wave field propagation were created.

Background: Scalable PTSD screening strategies must be brief, accurate and capable of administration by a non-specialized workforce.

Methods: We used PTSD as determined by the structured clinical interview as our gold standard and considered predictors sets of (a) Posttraumatic Stress Checklist-5 (PCL-5), (b) Primary Care PTSD Screen for the DSM-5 (PC-PTSD) and, (c) PCL-5 and PC-PTSD questions to identify the optimal items for PTSD screening for public sector settings in Kenya. A logistic regression model using LASSO was fit by minimizing the average squared error in the validation data.

Fetal growth restriction and underlying placental insufficiency are associated with increased oxidative stress. Current diagnostics fail to identify all growth restricted fetuses and newborns, due to focus on small size. This scoping review aims to summarize the available evidence on usefulness of cord blood oxidative stress biomarkers for identification of growth restricted newborns in need of monitoring and support because of associated health risks.

This paper provides an overview of the HEAT (Healthy Environments for AthleTes) project, which aims to understand the impact of environmental conditions on athlete health and performance during major sporting events such as long-distance running, cycling, and triathlons. In collaboration with the SAFER (Strategies to reduce Adverse medical events For the ExerciseR) initiative, the HEAT project carried out a field campaign at the 2022 Comrades Marathon in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The measurement campaign deployed seven weather stations, seven PM monitors and one spore trap along the 90 km route to capture spatially representative measurements of complex micro-climates, allergenic aerospora, and particulate matter exposure.

Background: Cervical spine injuries in children are uncommon but potentially devastating; however, indiscriminate neck imaging after trauma unnecessarily exposes children to ionising radiation. The aim of this study was to derive and validate a paediatric clinical prediction rule that can be incorporated into an algorithm to guide radiographic screening for cervical spine injury among children in the emergency department.

Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study, we screened children aged 0-17 years presenting with known or suspected blunt trauma at 18 specialised children's emergency departments in hospitals in the USA affiliated with the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN).

Background: Unfavorable lipid profile is associated with pregnancy disorders characterized by uteroplacental dysfunction, including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preterm birth and fetal growth restriction. None of current tools used to predict the risk of pregnancy complications include lipid levels.

Objective(s): In this study, we examined the association of preconception lipid profile with pregnancy disorders characterized by uteroplacental dysfunction in a multi-ethnic population, aiming to improve the identification of women at high risk for uteroplacental dysfunction using current prediction models.

We study the response of a quantitative trait to exponential directional selection in a finite haploid population, both at the genetic and the phenotypic level. We assume an infinite sites model, in which the number of new mutations per generation in the population follows a Poisson distribution (with mean Θ) and each mutation occurs at a new, previously monomorphic site. Mutation effects are beneficial and drawn from a distribution.

The medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) has been intensively investigated as a primary source of inhibition in brainstem auditory circuitry. MNTB-derived inhibition plays a critical role in the computation of sound location, as temporal features of sounds are precisely conveyed through the calyx of Held/MNTB synapse. In adult gerbils, cholinergic signaling influences sound-evoked responses of MNTB neurons via nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs; Zhang et al.
