In two totally independent experiments, typical intermediate cells were visually selected by experienced cytotechnicians trained in the analysis of monodisperse Papanicolaou-stained ectocervical smears. The smears were carefully diagnosed per se and in correlation with routine smears from the same patients. For specimens of classes exhibiting tumor cells, the diagnosis was histologically verified.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMachine recognition of ectocervical cells has been achieved with good classification success by a number of research groups. Even though a substantial number of cell image features have been introduced, only a moderate number are required for classification. For them, definitions and measures of their discriminatory potential are presented.

In the first case a tuberculous abscess of the liver was considered after an ultrasonic examination of the periphery of an hepatic calcification discovered many years ago; a right hepatectomy confirmed the diagnosis. The second patient was treated twenty years ago for a tuberculous exsudative peritonitis.

The rapid progress in computer technology makes possible the automatic analysis of thousands of cells on a slide in the field of automatic uterine cancer cytology. Our approach starts with the high-resolution scanning of visually selected and classified single cells determining the training set for discriminant analysis. On the basis of more than 15 morphologic and textural features measured, correct classification results of 95% are reached.

In 360 cases there was disease of the gall-bladder or a faint opacification of the common bile duct was abnormal in only three cases, which is a rate of 0,47%. Therefore the fatty meal after oral cholecystography should not be done in each case but only if there is a presumptive diagnosis of pancreatic disease, if there is pancreatic calcification, or if surgery has been previously performed on the biliary tract or duodenum.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAn investigation on 1000 cases of oral cholecystography allowed us to collect 640 non pathologic opacifications of the gallblader and among them only 3 cases of pathological common bile ducts (0,47 percent). Consequently when the gallbladder appears normal on the oral cholecystography, the fatty meal seems to be non compulsory but only when clinical findings are in favor of a pancreatic disease or if there are pancreatic calcifications or if surgery has been performed anteriorly on the bile ducts, the liver or the pancreas.

Two methods for high resolution cell image data acquisition are applied routinely. Cells are either scanned by a computer controlled fast scanning microscope photometer (SMP) or a TV-camera. The software system for digital image analysis was completely revised and implemented on the PR 330 minicomputer.

Analyses of variance of the standard CPI scales indicated numerous race, sex, and race X sex effects. A comparison of the results of factor analyses of the responses of black and white subjects (within each sex) indicated a similarity in factor structure between the two female groups, but not for the two male groups.

The DBA/2J mice were more susceptible to infection and had higher mortality rates than other strains of mice. Guinea pigs were more susceptible to infection than mice.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA large, rapidly growing subcutaneous fibrosarcoma was observed on the head of an aged male white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Frederick County, Maryland. Although there was no evidence of distant metastasis, the large neoplastic mass had extensively invaded the osseous supraorbital process, and had several small satellite nodules nearby.

The MMPI profiles of 91 male veterans who ranged in age from 18-45 years were classified according to two-point code types. A comparison was made of the most frequently occurring code types among drug abusers, medical patients, and psychiatric patients.

Blood samples were taken from nonanesthetized macaques conditioned to repeated handling. Arterial pH increased and PCO2 decreased during the febrile period.

Direct macrophage migration inhibition was observed in cultured peritoneal exudate cells as early as 3 days after exposure. Maximum inhibition of macrophages cultured with phase I or II antigen occurred 14 to 21 days postexposure and persisted through 35 days.

These factors were described, and were named General Adjustment and Social Sensitivity, respectively. The second order configuration of CPI scales appeared to be consistent with other research done on the scales.
