Objective: To develop and validate a county deprivation index (CDI) that assesses socio-economic disparities and their impact on health outcomes at the county level.

Study Design: A retrospective, cross-sectional study using publicly available county-level data.

Methods: Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to group 18 county-level socio-economic indicators into three clusters: economic well-being and technical connectivity, socio-economic disadvantage and vulnerability, and housing affordability and quality of life.

Research Best Practices for Eye Stroke Vision Rehabilitation: A Qualitative Study.

Purpose: Central retinal artery occlusion, also known as an eye stroke, results in visual impairment and functional challenges. Our study objectives were to identify meaningful measures and factors that indicate or enable successful recovery after eye stroke and to determine optimal processes to support research, including exploring barriers and facilitators to successful research participation.

Methods: We used qualitative methods including the 5Ts Framework (target population identification, team composition, time considerations, tips to accommodate older adults, tools for inclusive enrollment of older adults) to provide a guide to the development of the semi-structured interviews and to help facilitate the research process such as the set-up of interviews.

Aberrant N-glycosylation has been associated with progression of the pediatric cancer neuroblastoma (NB) but remains understudied. Here we investigated oligomannose N-glycans in NB by genetic editing of in a human NB cell line, BE(2)-C, called BE(2)-C(MGAT1). Lectin binding studies confirmed that BE(2)-C(MGAT1) had decreased complex and increased oligomannose N-glycans.

Impact of a Novel Wearable Sensor on Heart Failure Rehospitalization: An Open-Label Concurrent-Control Clinical Trial.

Background: There is an unmet need for early detection of heart failure decompensation, allowing patients to be managed remotely and avoid hospitalization.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare a strategy utilizing data from a wearable HF sensor for management following a HF hospitalization to usual care.

Methods: Eligible subjects were discharged from the hospital within the previous 10 days and had a HF event in the previous 6 months.

Longitudinal monitoring of hypertonia through a multimodal sensing glove.

As clinical evaluations of neuromuscular disorders such as hypertonia mostly rely on perception-based scales, the imprecise subjective ratings make it difficult to accurately monitor treatment progress. To promote objective evaluation, this work used a multi-modal sensing glove in a double-blind study to enable sensitive monitoring of medication effects across 19 participants. The biomechanical measurements from the sensing glove effectively distinguished patient cohorts receiving a baclofen treatment or a placebo with 95% confidence.

A Case of an Autoimmune Blistering Disease: Pemphigus Vulgaris.

Pemphigus vulgaris is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the formation of intraepithelial blisters that clinically appear as erosions and flaccid bullae on the skin and mucus membranes. Herein, we report a case of pemphigus vulgaris in an elderly male. He was initially misdiagnosed by his primary care provider and given topical lidocaine and acetaminophen with hydrocodone, without improvement in symptoms.

Sex differences in achieving guideline-recommended heart rate control among a large sample of patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest.

Background: Despite known clinical benefits, guideline-recommended heart rate (HR) control is not achieved for a significant proportion of patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction. The wearable cardioverter-defibrillator (WCD) provides continuous HR monitoring and alerts that could aid medication titration.

Objective: This study sought to evaluate sex differences in achieving guideline-recommended HR control during a period of WCD use.

Background: Patients in intensive care units (ICUs) are susceptible to medication errors (MEs) for many reasons, including the complexity and intensity of care. Little is known about patient safety culture, its relationship to medication safety, and ME prevention strategies used in ICUs. This study explored the attitudes of healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in ICUs or within medication safety towards patient safety culture, medication safety, and factors influencing implementation of ME prevention strategies in ICUs across Europe.

Introduction: Reducing disparities in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates and mortality remains a priority. Mitigation strategies to reduce these disparities have largely been unsuccessful. The primary aim is to determine variables in models of healthcare utilization and their association with CRC screening and mortality in North Carolina.

Health Screening Among a Rural, Hourly Workforce: North Carolina SERVIRE Project.

Introduction: This study demonstrates the feasibility of a novel, business-partnered, and worksite-based approach to healthcare access to facilitate chronic disease screening and diagnosis among rural hourly workers. The prevalence of undiagnosed and untreated diabetes and hypertension among screening participants was determined.

Methods: From February 2021 to June 2023, investigators partnered with 29 businesses to screen 1,114 workers.

Quantum Computation of Hydrogen Bond Dynamics and Vibrational Spectra.

Calculating observable properties of chemical systems is often classically intractable and widely viewed as a promising application of quantum information processing. Here, we introduce a new framework for solving generic quantum chemical dynamics problems using quantum logic. We experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-principle instance of our method using the QSCOUT ion-trap quantum computer, where we experimentally drive the ion-trap system to emulate the quantum wavepacket dynamics corresponding to the shared-proton within an anharmonic hydrogen bonded system.

Providing value to patients and providers via a pediatric statewide antibiogram in South Carolina.

Objective: Antimicrobial stewardship has special challenges in particular populations and facilities, including pediatrics. We sought to augment the information available to antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) by created a cumulative statewide antibiogram for neonatal and pediatric populations.

Methods: In the Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative of South Carolina (ASC-SC), we created statewide antibiograms, including a separate antibiogram accounting for the pediatric and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) populations.
