Assessment of sleep pattern and quality before and after liver transplantation using different methods.

Background/aims: Sleep disorders (SDs) are frequently seen in patients with liver cirrhosis. Polysomnography (PSG), actigraphy, and electroencephalogram (EEG) are the common objective methods to diagnose SDs. The most commonly used subjective methods are the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS).

Lack of association between IL-1beta/alpha gene polymorphisms and temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) is one of the most common medically intractable epilepsy syndromes and the pathogenesis of HS remains highly obscure. Recent studies demonstrated controversial results about the relationship between interleukin (IL) gene polymorphism and epilepsy in different ethnic groups. This correlation was investigated in Turkish patients with MTLE-HS.

Two siblings with homocystinuria presenting with dystonia and parkinsonism.

Movement disorders such as dystonia, chorea or tremor are rarely encountered in patients with homocystinuria. We present 2 siblings with laboratory-confirmed homocystinuria, one with severe generalized dystonia and the other with mild parkinsonism. The movement disorders in our patients appeared in the second and first decades, respectively.

Two schoolboys with diagnostic criteria for psychogenic movement disorder (PMD) are described: one with bizarre tremor of the right hand and a very slow and cautious gait, another with exaggerated trunk sway and collapses during standing and walking.
