Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how multi-particle production in proton-proton collisions changes with the number of charged particles produced, focusing on jets and the underlying event.
  • Charged particles are measured based on specific momentum and spatial criteria, and jets are created from these particles while being analyzed alongside data from event generators like Pythia and Herwig.
  • Results show that existing models struggle to accurately predict the observed behavior in the data, particularly at high multiplicities, indicating a need for improved tuning or new elements in theoretical frameworks.

Relative to diets enriched in palmitic acid (PA), diets rich in oleic acid (OA) are associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. To gain insight into mechanisms underlying these observations, we applied comprehensive lipidomic profiling to specimens collected from healthy adults enrolled in a randomized, crossover trial comparing a high-PA diet to a low-PA/high-OA (HOA) diet. Effects on insulin sensitivity (SI) and disposition index (DI) were assessed by intravenous glucose tolerance testing.

The four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1-DENV-4) have a large impact on global health, causing 50-100 million cases of dengue fever annually. Herein, we describe the first kinetic T cell response to a low-dose DENV-1 vaccination study (10 PFU) in humans. Using flow cytometry, we found that proinflammatory cytokines, IFNγ, TNFα, and IL-2, were generated by DENV-1-specific CD4(+) cells 21 days post-DENV-1 exposure, and their production continued through the latest time-point, day 42 (p<0.

A high-throughput optical technique has been developed for the rapid screening of coking resistant composition-spread promoted-catalyst libraries during hydrocarbon cracking, in particular for Jet Propellant 8(JP-8) cracking. The libraries are screened by measuring changes in the catalyst's surface color due to the accumulation and burnoff of coke from the surface during JP-8 exposure and catalyst regeneration via oxygen burnoff. This rapid screening method was validated through a comparison of the coking properties of high-surface area powder cracking catalysts, and sputter deposited samples.

A search for pair-produced heavy vectorlike charge-2/3 quarks, T, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC. Events consistent with the flavor-changing-neutral-current decay of a T quark to a top quark and a Z boson are selected by requiring two leptons from the Z-boson decay, as well as an additional isolated charged lepton. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.

A study of events with missing transverse energy and an energetic jet is performed using pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1). An excess of these events over standard model contributions is a signature of new physics such as large extra dimensions and unparticles.

A search for the rare decays B(s)(0) → μ+ μ- and B(0) → μ+ μ- is performed in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.14 fb(-1), collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In both cases, the number of events observed after all selection requirements is consistent with expectations from background and standard-model signal predictions.

The objective was to evaluate the determinants of change (Δ) in insulin sensitivity in overweight coronary artery disease male patients without diabetes after an intensive lifestyle intervention. All patients received nutritional counseling and performed 4 months of exercise training (ET) according to 1 of 2 protocols: aerobic ET (65%-70% of peak aerobic capacity [VO(2)]) 25 to 40 minutes 3 times a week (n = 30) or walking (50%-60% of peak VO(2)) 45 to 60 minutes at least 5 times a week (n = 30). Data from participants of both ET groups were pooled, and post-intensive lifestyle intervention results were compared with baseline data.

Background: In spite of the significant mortality associated with Plasmodium falciparum infection, the mechanisms underlying severe disease remain poorly understood. We have previously shown evidence of endothelial activation in Ghanaian children with malaria, indicated by elevated plasma levels of both von Willebrand factor (VWF) and its propeptide. In the current prospective study of children in Malawi with retinopathy confirmed cerebral malaria, we compared these markers with uncomplicated malaria, non malarial febrile illness and controls.

We describe one- to three-year results of a novel use of fibrin glue in the treatment of cartilage damage by arthroscopy in the hip. This technique uses the microfracture technique and fibrin adhesive to bond delaminated articular cartilage to the underlying subchondral bone. This is generally performed in conjunction with treatment of underlying pathology such as femoroacetabular impingement.

There is increasing evidence that individuals with non-specific low back pain (LBP) have altered movement coordination. However, the relationship of this neuromotor impairment to recurrent pain episodes is unknown. To assess coordination while minimizing the confounding influences of pain we characterized automatic postural responses to multi-directional support surface translations in individuals with a history of LBP who were not in an active episode of their pain.

Article Synopsis
  • The inclusive jet cross section was measured in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, specifically at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the CMS experiment.
  • The analysis involved a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 34 pb(-1) and focused on jet transverse momenta ranging from 18 to 1100 GeV, with rapidity values below 3.
  • The results indicate that the measured cross section aligns with the highest jet p(T) values recorded, and is consistent with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, accounting for experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Background: The risk of postnatal HIV transmission is associated with the magnitude of the milk virus load. While HIV-specific cellular immune responses control systemic virus load and are detectable in milk, the contribution of these responses to the control of virus load in milk is unknown.

Methods: We assessed the magnitude of the immunodominant GagRY11 and subdominant EnvKY9-specific CD8+ T lymphocyte response in blood and milk of 10 A*3002+, HIV-infected Malawian women throughout the period of lactation and correlated this response to milk virus RNA load and markers of breast inflammation.
