Kinins are vasoactive peptides that stimulate two G-protein coupled bradykinin receptors (B1R and B2R). B2R-knockout mice are salt sensitive and develop renal dysgenesis and hypertension if salt stressed during embryogenesis. B1R-knockout mice, on the other hand, are protected from inflammation and fibrosis.

Introduction: Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is internationally considered the standard procedure in surgical treatment of diseases of the spleen. We present our initial results with LS compared with open splenectomy (OS).

Material And Methods: This study is a prospective investigation of 12 elective, consecutive LS compared with 12 matching OS controls.

Purpose: To compare stability after anterior instrumentation alone versus modified combined anterior and posterior instrumentation for burst fractures of the thoracolumbar spine in calves.

Methods: Thoracolumbar spines of 10 calves were used. An axial compression force was applied on each specimen using a material-testing machine, until there was a burst fracture at T12 or L1.

We report a sporadic case of congenital lateral cleft palate and lateral palatal synechiae and suggest that its mechanism is embryonal. This is the first published case that we know of with cleft palate-lateral synechiae syndrome including the lateral cleft palate.

A case diagnosed as Bardet-Biedl syndrome with polydactyly and hypertension has been presented here. Bardet-Biedl syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder, which includes renal dystrophy, dystrophic extremities (often polydactyly), obesity, hypogenitalism, renal disease, and mental retardation. It was first described by John Z.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of magnetic endoscope imaging (MEI) regarding examination time, caecal intubation rate, and sedation and analgesic requirements during routine colonoscopy compared with earlier used X-ray imaging.

Methods: Consecutive outpatients undergoing colonoscopy were prospectively studied for two periods. In the first period X-ray was used to establish the correct position of the endoscope.

The goal of this study was to evaluate outcome of patients with pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) managed by Yttrium90 (90Y) after debulking surgery. Seven patients (3 males and 4 females) with PVNS were studied retrospectively. Mean follow-up was 47.

Based on the positive international experience with laparoscopic splenectomy on a large number of patients since 1991, we treated two teenagers with symptomatic hereditary spherocytosis and moderate splenomegaly. Both operations and postoperative courses were uneventful, and the children had improved clinically at the one-month control. The aim of this article is to emphasize the good results with the operation worldwide and suggests that the method may be introduced in Denmark.

Chronic synovitis, unresponsive to systemic medical therapy including agents, anti-inflammatory drugs and remission-inducing agents, and intra-articular administration of corticosteroids can be treated with surgical, chemical and radiation synovectomy. We reported a case of a 23 years old male. Skin radiation necrosis (4 x 5 cm) developed after an injection of Yttrium-90 (Y-90).

Background: As most of the skin lesions tend to grow in a circular pattern, the resultant defects after surgical removal of these lesions are often circular. Although a number of local flap procedures have been described, alternative techniques are still needed for the closure of circular defects.

Purpose: Here, a new surgical technique for the closure of circular skin defects is presented.

Some production parameters of seropositive cows (age, first calving age, 305 day mature equivalent last milk yield production, lifetime mature equivalent milk yield production, lifetime total milk production, lifetime total milking period, lifetime monthly milk production, lifetime daily milk production, lifetime total days of milking, number of inseminations per pregnancy (for last pregnancy), number of calves and calving interval (for last pregnancy)) were analysed in the current study. The study population was clinically healthy Holstein cows from a commercial dairy herd in southern Turkey. Of 109 animals, 65 cows were seropositive by ELISA and the prevalence of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection was 59.

Background: Although several techniques have been described for total lower-lip reconstruction, it is still a major reconstructive challenge, which often requires lengthy and risky microsurgical procedures.

Purpose: Here, we present a new local procedure, namely, bilateral musculocutaneous unequal-Z procedure for functional reconstruction of total lower-lip defects.

Material And Methods: In this technique, 2 musculocutaneous flaps including the depressor anguli oris and platysma muscles, respectively, are used in an unequal Z-plasty manner on each side of the defect.

Background: Although small meningomyeloceles may be amenable to direct closure by undermining of the surrounding skin, the closure of large meningomyelocele defects is a challenging reconstructive problem.

Purpose: Here, we present a new surgical procedure for the closure of large meningomyelocele defects.

Material And Methods: In this procedure, after neurosurgical repair and closure of the placode, the defect is surgically converted to a triangle in shape.

The authors present their experience related to extreme complications in treatment of diaphyseal fractures of the long bones with application of the Fixion expansion intramedullary nail in a total of 48 surgeries. We have encountered six (12.5%) extreme complications in the management of fractures of 3 humeral, 2 tibial, and 1 femoral bones during its application procedure and postoperative follow-up.

In this study, 162 horses, 80 donkeys and 51 mule serum samples were collected in Konya city. Additionally, 64 horse serum samples from Ankara and 49 samples from Kayseri city were included in the study. A total of 406 serum samples were examined by agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antibody to equine infectious anaemia virus (EIAV) and no positive result was detected.

Silicones are widely used materials in many fields of medicine and largely are believed to be biologically inert. However, some investigators have reported that silicone implants are associated with an increased incidence of autoimmune disorders. In this study, we evaluated the capsular tissue of silicone implants and the sera of implant patients and controls for antisilicone antibodies and nonspecific immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE).

Purpose: To compare one-stage combined surgery with and without preoperative traction, in older children with developmental dislocation of the hip (DDH).

Methods: Records of 9 children who underwent combined surgery for DDH with preoperative traction in 12 hips (group 1) and 12 undergoing the same procedure without preoperative traction in 16 hips (group 2) were retrospectively reviewed. The surgery consisted of open reduction, Salter's innominate osteotomy and femoral shortening with derotation varus osteotomy.

Background: The unfavorable temporoauriculomastoid region is a serious clinical problem that makes total ear reconstruction a real challenge. In patients who have it, all local flap solutions to provide skin coverage to the cartilage frame are precluded because of loss and/or severe scarring of the regional skin in association with loss of the axial vascularity of the region. In the current literature, all available techniques for these patients are lengthy and risky free flap procedures that can provide a poor quality of skin coverage with no aesthetic harmony at best.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of extracorporeal shock wave treatment (ESWT) on bony union using volume analysis of the callus mass by computed tomography and histology.

Methods: Both radii of 13 rabbits were osteotomised and a defective bony nonunion created by placing a polyethylene pad between the osteotomy site for 40 days. Nonunion was confirmed by radiography using Lane-Sandhu criteria.

A new nonmicrosurgical technique for one-stage total phallic reconstruction is presented. In this procedure, an innervated anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap including the medial half of the fascia latae is combined with a sartorius perforator flap. Both flaps are elevated together as an island chimeric flap based on the lateral circumflex femoral vessels and tunneled to the recipient area.

Background: Apoptosis, or programmed cell death is a form of physiological cell death. It is increased or decreased in the presence of infection, inflammation or tissue remodelling. Previous studies suggest that apoptosis is involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory periodontal disease.
