We reviewed the literature on neuroimaging of tubers and subependymal nodules and found qualitative evidence of bilateral, predominantly frontal distribution of tubers and bilateral, predominantly subcortical distribution of subependymal nodules in prior studies of pediatric samples. We studied 25 high-functioning adults with tuberous sclerosis complex and normal IQ, acquiring both dual spin-echo and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging sequences to optimize radiologic diagnosis of tubers and nodules.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to characterize the effects of ketamine on frontal and hippocampal responses to memory encoding and retrieval in healthy volunteers using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, within-subjects comparison of two doses of intravenous ketamine. An almost complete lack of bias, a simple relation between the variance and the signal-to-noise ratio in the original complex data, and a close approximation to normality facilitated estimation of the tensor components by an iterative weighted least squares algorithm. The theory of the linear model has also been used to derive the distribution of mean diffusivity, to develop an informative statistical test for relative lack of fit of the ellipsoidal (or spherical) model compared to an unrestricted linear model in which no specific shape is assumed for the diffusion process, and to estimate the signal-to-noise ratios in the original data.

The study of dynamic interdependences between brain regions is currently a very active research field. For any connectivity study, it is important to determine whether correlations between two selected brain regions are statistically significant or only chance effects due to non-specific correlations present throughout the data. In this report, we present a wavelet-based non-parametric technique for testing the null hypothesis that the correlations are typical of the data set and not unique to the regions of interest.

Using event-related fMRI, we have attempted to contribute to this debate by identifying brain regions associated with the successful recognition of famous faces from two different periods: "Old" faces of people who became famous in the 1960s-1970s and "Recent" faces of people who became famous in the 1990s. We demonstrate that the hippocampus is involved in the successful recognition of famous faces from both periods and does not appear to distinguish between these two periods.

We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to show that individuals with aniridia and deficits in executive and social cognition, due to heterozygous mutation of the neurodevelopmental control gene PAX6, have structural abnormalities of grey matter in anterior cingulate cortex, cerebellum and medial temporal lobe, as well as white matter deficits in corpus callosum. Functional MRI demonstrated reduced activation of fronto-striato-thalamic systems during performance of overt verbal fluency and nonsense sentence completion; the most consistent abnormality of verbal executive activation was located in the thalamus.

We investigated the effects of dopaminergic drug treatment (sulpiride) on the relationship between somatosensory stimulus intensity and cortical response measured electrophysiologically by somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The intensity of stimulation was related by a simple power law to both electrophysiological and fMRI measures of cortical response, with overlapping confidence intervals for both power law exponents.
