Introduction: Right ventricular dysfunction is associated with mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) but information in veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) settings is limited. Study objectives were to examine factors associated with right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction (RVSD) and RV dilation in ECMO patients with ARDS, to compare outcomes in those with and without RVSD and RV dilation defined by qualitative and quantitative parameters, and to describe RVSD evolution during ECMO.

Methods: Retrospective observational study of adult ARDS patients supported with ECMO at a tertiary care hospital.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and functional genomic analyses have implicated several ITGAM (CD11b) single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the development of SLE and other disorders. ITGAM encodes the α chain of the β integrin Mac-1, a receptor that plays important roles in myeloid cell functions. The ITGAM SNP rs1143679, which results in an arginine to histidine change at amino acid position 77 of the CD11b protein, has been shown to reduce binding to several ligands and to alter Mac-1-mediated cellular response in vitro.

Depending on the weight bearing status of the operated extremity, a wide array of durable medical equipment devices are available to provide mobility and safety for the patient.

Objectives: Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation was evaluated after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) procedures in a randomized, controlled clinical study performed for United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. PEMF significantly increased fusion rates at six months, but 12-month fusion outcomes for subjects at elevated risk for pseudoarthrosis were not thoroughly reported. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of PEMF treatment on subjects at increased risk for pseudoarthrosis after ACDF procedures.

The design and fabrication of electrodes for direct current (dc) high voltage photoemission electron guns can significantly influence their performance, most notably in terms of maximum achievable bias voltage. Proper electrostatic design of the triple-point junction shield electrode minimizes the risk of electrical breakdown (arcing) along the insulator-cable plug interface, while the electrode shape is designed to maintain <10 MV/m at the desired operating voltage aiming at little or no field emission once conditioned. Typical electrode surface preparation involves diamond-paste polishing by skilled personnel, requiring several weeks of effort per electrode.

Background: Trinity Evolution® (TE), a viable cellular bone allograft, previously demonstrated high fusion rates and no safety-related concerns after single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) procedures. This prospective multicenter clinical study was performed to assess the radiographic and clinical outcomes of TE in subjects undergoing two-level ACDF procedures.

Introduction: Decompression sickness (DCS) is a rare and dangerous complication from a rapid decrease in environmental pressure, commonly seen in patients leaving a compressed-air environment, such as scuba divers, aviators, and deep tunnel workers. Failure to clinically diagnose and adequately treat DCS with hydration and supplemental oxygen before bridging to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy can result in permanent residual symptoms or, in rare cases, death. Despite the increasing incidence of DCS, there are limited published simulation case studies discussing this perilous environmental exposure.

The glycosyltransferase ST6Gal-I, which adds α2-6-linked sialic acids to substrate glycoproteins, has been implicated in carcinogenesis; however, the nature of its pathogenic role remains poorly understood. Here we show that ST6Gal-I is upregulated in ovarian and pancreatic carcinomas, enriched in metastatic tumors, and associated with reduced patient survival. Notably, ST6Gal-I upregulation in cancer cells conferred hallmark cancer stem-like cell (CSC) characteristics.

Background: Grade 2 gliomas occur most commonly in young adults and cause progressive neurologic deterioration and premature death. Early results of this trial showed that treatment with procarbazine, lomustine (also called CCNU), and vincristine after radiation therapy at the time of initial diagnosis resulted in longer progression-free survival, but not overall survival, than radiation therapy alone. We now report the long-term results.

Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) plays an important role in leukocyte trafficking, induction of cellular immune responses, and immunological synapse formation. As a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of adhesion proteins, ICAM-1 is composed of repeating Ig-like domains, a transmembrane domain, and short cytoplasmic tail that participates in intracellular signaling events. At least seven ICAM-1 protein isoforms are generated by alternative splicing, however little is known regarding their immunobiology.

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a severe clinical complication of Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection and is characterized by a high fatality rate and neurological damage. Sequestration of parasite-infected red blood cells in brain microvasculature utilizes host- and parasite-derived adhesion molecules and is an important factor in the development of CM. ICAM-1, an alternatively spliced adhesion molecule, is believed to be critical on endothelial cells for infected red blood cell sequestration in CM.

Regulation of integrin activity enables leukocytes to circulate freely, avoiding inappropriate adhesion while maintaining the ability to adhere quickly at sites of infection or inflammation. This regulation involves at least two components: affinity for ligand and affinity-independent avidity effects such as lateral mobility. Using lymphocyte function associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) as a model, we investigated the role of integrin release from cytoskeletal motion constraints in response to the chemokine stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1α) in this process.
